Problems

Post by mccutcheon »

Less than three months before Ian Curtis's untimely death, Joy Division- the most cataclysmically significant pop group in the world, ventured north to play in Preston, Lancashire. As the equipment systematically collapsed Ian offered a perfunctory apology. “Some slight problems, he said.

I still don't know what anybody sees in JD. Sorry. David Byrne did the geeky, weirdo, suicidal dark techno thing much better in 1979's Fear of Music.

"This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco,
This ain’t no fooling around
This ain’t no mudd club, or c. b. g. b.,
I ain’t got time for that now"
-Life During Wartime

"Everyone is trying to get to the bar.
The name of the bar, the bar is called heaven.
The band in heaven plays my favorite song.
They play it once again, they play it all night long."
-David Byrne

Oi fucker. Joy Division were from Salford. Salford and Preston are pissing distance from one another. It is hardly venturing north to play. It is driving west though.

I only quote-ith. That's from the liner notes on The Preston album, and it's by none other than Tony fucking Wilson himself.

that's even worse. As old Tony himself would know the redistricting of counties only took place in the seventies. Manchester, Liverpool,Oldham,Lancaster and Preston etc were all part of Lancashire. The replacement counties Greater Manchester,Merseyside etc were a way of curbing the regional powerbase that was Lancashire county council. If he was being true to his roots he would know it would be impossible to go north to Lancashire from Lancashire.

Ian killed himself on May 18th. Tommy joined the Bulletin of Bad Behavoir on May 19th. Don't believe me, check his bio. Tommy's that is. Coincidence? I think yes.

I remember reading about Ian Curtis dying. Dave Mccullogh I think was the writer for Sounds magazine. He had heard about it when a friend had called him to say that the teardrop explodes had dedicated a song to the late Ian Curtis a few nights previously. I had already heard but I didn't know it was a hanging suicide. The article, I think, was called "The short goodbye." I can't recall what it said but I do remember that it caused a tiff between the writer and Mark E Smith because he used some of his work to draw an insight.

Funny that you should post this thread as I was thinking about those times already today on acccount of Ian McCullogh doing an interview in the Independent (Independent.co.uk) Was it really a quarter of a century ago that the Bunnymen formed? Some of the stuff he mentions opened the nostalgia floodgates. Of the three members of the crucial three my favourite was Pete Wylie. His first single, "Better Scream" I bought out of a plastic bag. They didn't even have a real sleeve. Pete what's his face the singer from Dead or Alive sold it to me. (The song incidently warned about the repercussions of US intervention in sovereign states. In those days central america but some might think the lyrics hold up today.)

Enough of all our yesterdays. I have to get back to making Thomas the tank engine fight off dragon attacks.

Adrian Morley is Tommy Martyn when he forgets his password.

Tommy/Adrian I recently bought the Billy Bragg ep called Help Save the Youth of America. On the back of the album he preaches to us kids that we need to watch who we vote for US president, because it affects the whole world. He said, next time please try to do better. He was referring to Bush sr. I guess we didn't listen. The world won't listen, world shut your mouth. Julian Cope. Didja know that Courtney Love tried to shag Saint Julian when they were tripping on acid in the old days in Liverpool and he said no, she was a skank. Just goes to prove my point. Once a Bush, always a Bush. Once a skank, always a skank.
