Luis Bunuel?

I was curious to know if anyone had any opinion
on the films of Luis Bunuel. I've just rented Belle De Jour and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

I don't have any opinion yet, having never seen those films, but thank you for reminding me, I've been wanting to see Discreet Charms...

I got a real kick out of Discreet. It's funny and bizarre, you never know what to expect. From what I understand, this Bunuel guy was some kind of pioneer of Surrealism in film, infact for his first film (1930) he worked with Salvador Dali. I'm a sucker for surrealism so I plan to check out more of his movies.

it's been a while -- like when the pixies played "debaser" which i think is one of the best songs ever -- since pop touched luis. i'm glad it seems to be happening again.

the movies, the books, the images, the philosophy: it's all good.

i'll tell you my favorite buÃƒÂ±uel/dali anecdote: one day, luis and salvador were talking about women, and... (actually, i am too busy to recap this one, but remind me some day and i will).

speaking of brilliant things, there was this post a few weeks ago by kyle -- and it was just great -- but i can't find it now that i have finished my various travels. what happened? what's the matter with me?

So her begineth the next lesson. Same as the last lesson on this dull as dishwater site. Somebody finds an item. They post something along the lines of, "I like this." This unleahes a torrent of other souls who,you guessed it,like it too. The end result: I"m fab,you're fab,we're all fab. No original thought or insight. No disagreement and no entertainment. A gang of wankers with cultural cliffs notes.

Once upon a time I went to university. During my first week there I attended a lecture by a big name academic. He ranged far and wide with brilliant insight for two hours. Being a new student I bent my head down and kept up with the note taking. It had been my previous experience that they were the source for the work to follow. At the end of the slot he informed the student body that, if anything he had told us turned up in a paper presented to him, then that student would be recieve a big fat zero. He pointed out that he had already researched and written the books on which his lectures were based. That information already existed and any idiot could copy it. What he needed was new analysis. It didn't help that he was also a complete twat. (He once told an aquaintance that his idea for a doctorral thesis was simply "shit.") The fact remains though, that he was right. If all you got to say is, "I like this," then find a site dedicated to wallpaper.

I think Pax Acidus has got it's own Mark E Smith, an old man still full of piss and vinegar. And, hate to say it Tommy, but I like it. Don't even mind that you say the site is dull as dishwater. Trust me, not everyone agrees all the time though.

I've tried to watch some of these foreign type films and find that I just can't get into them. I like explosions and sex. Preferably at the same time. I also tend to like movies that take place in warm climates regardless of content such as The Beach and Blue Crush. My wife always makes fun of me because I tend to buy books based on their covers. I get attracted to shiny bright books. Suprisingly this method has served me very well, I am rarely dissapointed. I'm off to chase some butterflies now.

Oh yeah, I have no idea who Jeff buckley is and really don't give a shit. I think Tommy is right about people dying young and getting too much credit for what ifs. Ever seen a James Dean movie? The guy was the shits. Kurt Cobain was a weak selfish child. Eddie Vedder (though not dead) should get the fuck over his step father already. My favourite movie of all time is Bull Durham and I think the Back Street boys have fantastic voices. Jackie O was a pussy for not having someone shoot that cheating bastard JFK, or maybe she did. Where's Myke? I liked that guy.

the new guy certainly has some things going for him -- like, he knows how to spell -- but he makes me wonder how one can get through life without a sense of humor.

there is a difference between having a critical consciousness and being plain arrogant.

arrogance is what causes an intelligent person to say such psychogenic stupid things as that this site is as dull as dishwater. if it is that dull, then what does it say about him that he wastes his time here?

i really have to paraphrase o. wilde here who said something to the effect that there are not good and bad people: merely charming people and boring people.

One more thing, if you don't like this site there is an option that is always open to you. You can go fuck yourself. I like insults as much as the next guy.
