CAnadian invasion!

Post by Myke115 »

Hasn't there been a lot of Canadian bands and artists making it big in the U.S. of late?? Sum41 ... which I think are kinda cool. Simple Plan ... pretty good too. Nickleback ... not so good. Avril Lavigne ... not for me. Default ... mediocre so far but the lead singer, Dallas Smith, has a phenomenal voice. Hey, and didn't you send us Celine Dion???? Curse you for that one!

You forgot Our Lady Peace, Barenaked Ladies, Moist, Tragically Hip, Nelly Furtada and Swollen Members. I'm going to see Pearl Jam at GM place on May 31st. I still believe they are one of the best bands of all time. Should be a hoot.

Yep. I left out quite a few good Canadian acts. Canada exports a lot of good talent down here. Can't forget "Kids in the Hall" and even Peter Jennings of ABCnews. And isn't Jimmy Fallon from Saturday Night Live Canadian?

oh .. .yeah .. Michael J. Fox. He seems like just a good guy.

Hot Hot Heat...to me, they aren't so hot.

Sum41 have a really gory CD sleeve. I don't care what they sound like.

I used to be a real Kids In The Hall junkie...

Is Michael J. Fox really Canadian? I didn't know that.
He's okay by me.

I'm not a Pearl Jam fan but was taken aback to hear Johnny Marr mention Eddie Vedder in positive terms when I saw Johnny live...um...well...okay if Johnny says so...

Canadian bands...first thing that comes to mind is Rush. A lot of people make fun of Rush. I'm a Rush fan so I don't give a shit. I don't care much about what they've done since say 1986, and I don't like their earliest stuff, but still, I'm a fan of plenty of their "middle period" albums. I realize Geddy's voice is not well tolerated by everyone, but oh well.
I'm a fan.

Other Canadian acts...Sarah McLachlan. Not a huge fan but I did buy her first album when it came out and liked it.

Brian Adams...yuck.

Only other thing that comes to mind readily was on my visit to Victoria (one of the most lovely vacations I ever had was in Victoria) there was a band playing in a nearby club to my hotel who were called Jazzberry Ram. They sounded really good.

Or is it Bryan Adams? Ah who cares.
Yeah "Cuts Like A Knife" sounded pretty good in the early eighties, but it was pretty much all downhill from there. Just my opinion. "Run To You" was okay.

I only wonder why you all bring up the most unattractive and boring "talent" that has come from Canada. Has anyone heard of Leonard Cohen or Neil Young?

Hail, hail to the lucky ones, I refer to those in love, and those going to the Pearl Jam concert on the 31st of May (and Jack)

Jack ... I like Sum41. They're far from boring.

Leonard Cohen ... agreed ... genius.

However ... Neil Young. I know all the rock establishment and the deep thinking Pearl Jams of the world love Neil Young ... but I can't stand to hear him sing. As someone said on another thread, it's like nails on a chalkboard, man. He may write great lyrics but his voice just plain sucks.

I'm neither deep thinking nor a pearl jam fan. However, I'm into expression. I'm into passion and soul. I can find that in Neil's music. I find it in artists like Miles and Dylan. I love real honest cultural music. Not many people find that in him and that's understandable though. It's often said of Neil you either love his music or you don't. He does get whiny, not any worse than say Dylan. The catalogue of 1970-1979 is a consistent, yet spectacular range of expression by the man with lyrics and sound. I'm also into bootleg tapes, so I get to hear a lot more rare live stuff from the 70's that is just spectacular, in my opinion.

Rosie, you are a sweetheart, but I'm not included in the lucky ones who are going to that concert. The hubby and I won't be able to see them until July in D.C.
