a pair of some of the greatest furniture makers of all time made what sounds like some fantabulous films. tonight's the last night its playing. go, for the love of god!

Films of Charles and Ray Eames

(FILM) The best--indeed, the only--story about Charles Eames I've ever heard is the one about how, when he decided to start making chairs, the first thing he did was to call a few hundred people into his workshop and measure each and every one of their asses. This novel approach to furniture design carried over into the experimental short films Eames made with his wife Ray, which are obsessed with the literalization of the figurative universe. The most famous, Powers of Ten (which appears here along with its prototype sketch) takes the viewer backwards from a picnic all the way to outer space, then shoots us back, frame by frame, into the heart of an atom, thus quantifying infinity. Atlas pulls a similar trick: It physicalizes the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in an expanding, then contracting, world map. The realm of ideas has seldom had such ingenious spokespeople. Anyone interested in anything at all--as the Eameses seemed to be--won't want to miss this program. SEAN NELSON

Nabi,
The powers of ten is actually used as a display (which had quite a large impact on me as a child)at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago, I had no idea it was made by the eames's, I'll have to see if my brother knows that, seeing as how he was the first to introduce me to it, and he's a furinture maker/certified luthier, and has been part of the SOFA shows here in Chicago!

more on films...so Mike Nichols makes one of my all time favorite movies The Graduate. It's got Hoffman at his finest, it's got the lovely Kate at her loveliest, there is drinking beer in swiming pools, strip clubs, convertable sports cars and sex rendezvous in hotel rooms. Plus the soundtrack kicks ass by Simon and Garfunkel. Thant's right, I said the S & G soundtrack kicks ass. Okay now let's pretend we are going to jump into the future. And you are told that Mike is going to make another film starring Mad Jack Nicholeson. Wouldn't you sell your molars with the gold fillings to see this film? I would if I had any teeth left. Now how fucking dissapointed would you be for having given up eating carrots and forced to stick to jello when the final project you watch is Wolf? Where Jack turns into a fat wolf and tries to fuck Michelle P. The mind does wonder, beside the trying to fuck Michelle part.

aragorn: i quite preferred the rough sketch of the powers of ten over the final product. i liked the voice over and presentation much better. it was beautiful, i agree. some of my favorites from last night, aside from both the powers of ten pieces, were the playful sketches of the spinning tops and the kaleidoscopic images of their stacking chairs, both set to jazz. now, off the subject: mcc, have you picked up gorillaz at all? i love it. what do you think? cheers~nabi
