The Driving Stupid

Post by marky »

It's a fabulous name for a band, the Driving Stupid. Which is why I decided to check them out. Apparently, they were from New Jersey and in 1966, they drove all the way to Hollywood, California in hopes of getting a record deal. They were insane, their lyrics were totally not serious. They were absolutely brilliant. And I can't talk about them on the other board right now because it's down. Here's some of their song titles:

"My Mother Was A Big Fat Pig"

"Green Things Have Entered My Skin, Gladys"

"Horror Asparagus Stories"

"Girl's Got a Turtle"

"The Reality of (Air) Fried Borsk"

It's only proof once again, that when it comes to really whacked out, weird, idiosyncratic music, the Americans actually outdo the Brits every time.

Though I guess it's fair to say they're kindof like the US equivalent of Half Man Half Biscuit from Liverpool. Catchy pop songs with ridiculous lyrics.

Here's some more:

"Water My Doing Here"

(keep in mind their album wasn't released for 35 years and only came out in 2002)

"I'm Gonna Bash Your Brains In"

"Hide The Lobsters"

Think the Monkees or the Beatles and you aren't too far off their music, this was 1966 after all.

"Happytime Springface and Flowers"

"Fast City!" (which is an ode to a car that barely runs)

Yeah, these guys were the shit.

Here's a review of it:

One last thing I'll say on this is even though it's from the 60's the production is really superb, I'm shocked. In some ways you can't tell it really came from as far back as 1966.
