Bright Lights, Big City

Post by TragicPixie »

So I have yet another paper to write ... and no, I haven't started yet... yeah, yeah I'm an awful student.

Anyway I think I'm going to write on Bright Lights, Big City but I don't really have a focus yet. I was going to possibly pull in more contemporary fiction that is similar and say something about how it's still very relevant today ... etc.

I don't know ... what the hell am I doing up before six am even?

BL, BC by McInerney ... maybe I'll use some of Mc's work ...

maybe I'll write about the portrayal of cocaine in contemporary lit...
I found a great sounding dissertation ... but it wasn't online and I don't want to go anywhere today really ... except maybe to get food ... but then again I'll probably order in.

Anyway .... it was on "The Brattpack and Other 80's Modern Culture in Literature"

... I'm such a nerd... I LOVE the brattpack. Heh.
I should call Melissa... tweekers are always up. J is asleep. He stole all the covers.

I haven't clapped eyes on this book for yonks. It contains one of my favourite jokes. The hero is on the subway, sat looking at a Hassidic Jew. He takes a whole paragraph to describe the life of these people and the many layers of deep meaning they glean from their adherence to an ancient religious culture. It is a great summary. Then the last sentence reads...(If I remember rightly)..."Still, what a fucking haircut." A set up and timing wothy of Woody Allen and Richard Pryor.

It was a great book to do - oh and wihle I'm still being a nerd here ...

I get to teach a section on Plath next semster!!! I'm excited. And terrified. What if I fuck it up? What if the students make fun of me? What if I am forever remembered as "that girl who actually likes to study or something ..." ?

And I will have to go buy some new clothes because I doubt rainbow brite phat pants are apporiate teaching-wear.

and Tommy - in the section about the Jews you're refering to doesn't in the next chapter or something one guy infer that they're dealing drugs? Or does that guy just happen to be Jewish? I could be off, but I think I know what I am talking about.
Anyway - really the reason I am using this book is according to many critics I've read this sort of fiction is dead. And, I would argue that it's very much not dead. I mean - see the influences of this stuff all around you know?
Or maybe I'm wrong and Paul will let me know I failed or got an F or something. (Is it weird I am on a first name basis with most of my professors... and even weirder that one hosted a party which I attended and ended up spinning a few records at and etc. and is coming to my rave tomorrow night? Or is this only odd because he's in his late 40s?)
