Holy shit...

Was out today at kennels looking for a dog. Am only looking at adult mutts...feel bad for them..cause people only adopt puppies.

So-the 4th dog I looked at (they bring them into a room with you so you can interact) decided to rip a piece of my face off.

Had to take its jaws off my cheek (only to have it then bite through a finger).

Went to the emergency room and a plastic surgeon stitched me up and I am going back next week to have all the stitches removed and talk about helping the scars not look so bad.

Some days just plain suck ass.

Adult dogs that grew up without love can be pricks.

holy moly tom. what a horrible thing to happen.

do you really know what you are doing? a neurotic dog is a menace to society. and a friendly but unstable dog needs loads of work. can you really afford to be constantly present for the next six months or so?

I really only have been looking at dogs whose history they know about...

I don't have the time for an unstable dog...but for one that say..owner died and they had to take them in, or dogs that familes could not longer take care of due to kids, or moving, etc....ya know-dogs that had a good life but now have no home. This dog (I think) was a hurricane dog...can't remember his history right now and it was one of those things where they just brought him in after I looked at dogs that I wanted to see....very random.

I've had both mutts from the SPCA & purebreads. In my experience I would only buy a dog from a breeder so i can meet its parents and get a good feel for its tempermant. Two out of three dogs i got from the pound had to be put down due to their fondness for human flesh. The two dogs I got from breeders have been by far the best dogs that anyone could hope to own.

Holy Shit indeed! That's messed up! Did they at least tell you that the dog might have violent tendencies when they brought it in?

A similar experience to Brett. I took Bullmastiffs from the Washington rescue association and had to give them back. (Apart from Sadie who they wanted to put down - but that's another story.) Unless I had a farm or a great big space, I wouldn't take an unknown dog. On the other hand, my dog Nelson is a gem. He has grown into exactly the kind of dog the breeder forecast. When his litter came along they asked us what we wanted out of our dog. Bullmastiffs are extremely powerful. We asked for the most placid character you can find. True to their word, they delivered. Apart from the farting - which can kill you - Nelson wouldn't hurt a fly.

I am actually looking forward to a cool scar. I'll be able to say to people at bars "you should see what the other guy looks like".

I still am going to get a mutt from the pound. I feel bad for them...especially the older guys...they need love...I just won't look at ones that the shelter does not the history of-or more importantly-ones that have not been in there for less than a week (which he was). The longer they are there the more they will show any signs of agression/etc.

Anyway-it's all proves an interesting correlation between violence and upbringing. Not that we can truly compare dogs to humans-but the dogs brought up in good/stable homes tend to grow up decent and considerate. Funny how some conservatives will balk at the notion of innercity ghetto life 'making' a criminal' (ie-they tend to say-"oh-if they really wanted to be a good person they could) but at the same time will agree that dogs from pounds can not be trusted and their abusive life makes them that way)....or am I off base here?
