I've decided to self-publish a book of my short stories and poems. It will be called --
'Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-Roll never goes out of Style'

Any tips what poems and stories I should include would be a great help. And you all better fucking buy one when they come out.

Right now there are three books that you should buy. Like right now, because if you can't take McCutcheon to bed you can do the next best thing. Take these books to bed, or the beach-- hell read them in the office for all I care. But buy them today and read away. Let's rock this DIY.

Ultimate Space Hit by our very own Sloth.

I gave it to a friend in NYC and he said it was the best book he had ever read and a work of utter genius- raises the bar of expectation so far it takes you to outer space.

Tom Brown Saves the World by Eddie Beverage.

Saving the world is deadly business, but someone had to do it. Eddie is a long time Pax Acidus aficionado. His first book was 200 Beats per Minute and is a book I still give to friends. Tom Brown has just come out and needs support. Eddie is the greatest underground writer in LA.

Hedonism by Tony Fletcher
Lust and Betrayal in New York's Clubland. This is a crime novel masterwork, Film Noir set to the background of Techno Technicolor. Main character is named Holy, but he might as well be called another name that starts with H. Like Humphrey, as in Bogart because Hedonism reads like Dashiell Hammet and Holy is like Sam Spade as an up and coming starving artist caught in the middle of a shit storm canvas.

Thank you for your support. Literally.

I've written 3 novels still un-published, and I'm publishing a book of poems and short stories called Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-Roll Never Goes Out of Style. Looking for other writers interested in sharing work, constructive criticisms and maybe a beer. Should check out my website to see if the genre is right for you.

Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-Roll Never Goes Out Of Style

Post by mccutcheon »

Here is the tentative line up I got going. This is certainly up for discussion and debate. Some times the person who is writing the stories doesn't know how good something is, or more to the point, how really bad something is that they have done.

I'm thinking poems first and then the short stories. Keep in mind I'm picking these to go along with the title of the book Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-Roll Never Goes Out Of Style.
Poems:
Druggy Slutty Girls
Hang Over Sex
How I became a Rolling Stones Fan
Valium
Bedroom
Wine
New Beat Fiction
Everyone Wants to be Beck
New York Cool
I'll Always Be There For You
The Next Leonard Cohen
Green Album by Belle & Sebastian
A Fine Line
Hippie Hippie Chick
Hip Hop DJ
The Score
Panic Attack

Stories:
Kiss Off
Little Blue Bunnies
Cruising
Sunday Morning
Messy Swingers
Waiting for her Funeral
Smokin' Black Crack with Shaun Ryder

all the world is is a lot of ?????????

Post by mccutcheon »

Side note—I put in Waiting for her Funeral instead of say, Girls Night Out or Cross Fader because Funeral is for Tara and one of my favorites and I don't think people like Cross Fader or Girls Night Out as much as I do.

Borgy-- I love Valentines Day (it was the first short story I ever wrote I was proud of) but I don't think it is strong enough over all, it has some of my favorite writing but other parts are weak and I don't seem to have the talent to fix it.

how many pages in a page turner?

okay I know that a novel is supposed to be 80,000 plus words. I have about 20 poems and almost all my short stories- except a few of the really bad ones and am only at 40,000 words. I wanted to keep it tight so the quality is high but I also don't want a sliver of a book.

Anyone know how they do this? are there industry rules?

HELP ASAP!!!!

good news Borgy is that Valentines day is going in. so is poem "I'll always be there for you. I like that one a lot. I just forgot.

I think 80,000 words is a good.

With short stories and poems I think it can be less.

FYI Ultimate Space Hit is 75,000 words.

Nothing wrong with a sliver of a book though.

I think with short story collections maybe 50,000 is a good target.

So then you can plan two books.

current line up

Post by mccutcheon »

Okay here is the current line up. If anyone thinks one of these stories sucks so bad please feel free to tell me. Anyone who helps gets a free copy. I think in a collection like this the book is only as good as the worst story. I don't know. I'm just trying to do something. Put it out there. I've added stories like Cashews and Speed Trap because they are in different person and stuff (and makes the book longer). Of course there are people who will detest the whole anthology. I can't worry about those people. I won't run into them anyway. I'm sure we hang out in very different circles.

So here they are in running order.

Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-Roll Never Goes Out Of Style
Word count: 46,529
Poems:
Druggy Slutty Girls
One Night Stand of the Future Ex Girlfriend
Valium
Bedroom
Green Album by Belle & Sebastian
A Fine Line
I'll Always be there for you
The Next Leonard Cohen
New York City Cool
Everyone Wants To Be Beck
Hip Hop DJ
New Beat Fiction
Wine
How I became a Rolling Stones Fan
The Score
Panic Attack

Stories:
Kiss Off
Little Blue Bunnies
Sunday Morning
Speed Trap
Cross Fader
Girls Night Out
Messy Swingers
Cruising
Blame Canada
Sex Starts in the Mind
Cashews
Cruising
Valentine's Day
Waiting For Her Funeral
Smokin' Black Crack with Shaun Ryder
2 Girls to get over 1
Bon Bon Breasts of Bourbon Street
Jamaican Vacation
The Weak End

I hate Messy Swingers. It should go. It is too much like that scene in Transpotting. (I think if I'm remembering correctly -- that was my first reaction)

I love Valentine's Day. I also like Cashews.

The Green Album . . . is your best poem in my opinion.

I've been editing the book.

Sara I changed the Green poem tell me what you think...

THE GREEN ALBUM BY BELLE & SEBASTIAN

Early morning,
My girlfriend and I wake up
It's the beginning of another day
The apartment window is open
Over the back alley the noise starts
City sounds seep into our lives
The men in the overhauls have arrived again
Loud clang of garbage cans
The smash of a thousand empty glass bottles
Recycled from the old run down gay bar
A cop siren wails down the block
Someone is in trouble already

Early morning,
My girlfriend and I lay in bed
Freshly awake and overly excited
We start making love to the song
“The Boy with the Arab Strap
We enjoy our Belle & Sebastian
We have every album, and e.p. collection
Scottish pop music makes the world sound better
A faint hiss escapes my girlfriend's lips
She lisps to a climax
I moan and we collapse
A few more songs until the album is over
People say you can't screw to Belle & Sebastian
But we sure like to

anyone want to get emailed a copy of the book and edit it? I'm sure you are all like me with nothing better to do.
