How Do You Tell Your Parents...

Sooo... I'm leaving for the UK in just under a month. I told my mum, she wasn't terribly happy. Actually, I think she told me I was wasting my life and etc. etc. etc.

I didn't tell my dad. How exactly should I break it to him... "Um, daddy, I know you think you own me and that I don't get any money anymore because I'm stupid and lazy and worthless and I know you think I need to get a real job but... I'm leaving for Europe in just under a month and I thought you should know?" That's not gonna go over very well....

Any suggestions? I'm tempted to just not mention it and leave but then, that would make me a coward. Of course, I don't want to end up in the hospital or anything so I should ideally break it to him in an un-angering way.

Any ideas?

Maybe a letter? I could write him a letter and then... um... stay out of the house for awhile... I don't move back into the dorm until the end of August sooo... that won't work.
I'd call him but then, I still have to come home sometime.

we won't have beautiful PA women growing a pair guest. But what to do, I think it is up to the parents to give their kids money to travel, and get laid and have a good time. Life is too short.

Me, ya that is right, I don't have kids or money.

I'm working on a piece for the philo,it goes like this (and I could use help)

Life is too short for:

dieting
heart break
heroin
baseball
jobs you hate
bad sex
quick sex (but once in a while it is worth it)
tv

or somehting like this

*raises an eyebrow* Grow a pair of what... 'Cause I have a rather nice pair... except they're up higher, bigger, and not wrinkly or hairy.

Much nicer.

Regardless... I agree with you MC. Except for the tv bit... I couldn't say that cause I always have the tv on though I rarely watch it (I need background noise and the radio sucks... at least it does here).

interesting topic.

i agree with most of the no-nos, except for example the quicky-sex thing, for which there surely is a time and place, every once in a while.

i don't know about the heroin stuff as i have never tried it.

i think heart break is necessary sometimes.

i think, as an addition, that addictions are a total waste of time.

one last pet peeve for me is commuting, even though it might be too obvious. when you spend hours a week, unpaid, just trying to get to work ontime, you are guaranteed to suffer uselessly.

Life is too short for sitting in your car rotting, yeah I'd go as far as to say Life is too short to live in LA. But that is me. I hate cars and freeways and thought it such a pity that such a pretty city like Seattle has a fucking major freeway running through it.

Something is seriously wrong with this guest board and where the fuck is the Sloth, did Linda leave him and he's sitting in his dark apartment alone drinking cough syrup and crying his eyes out? Of course not, so what the fuck. And why did my story Jamaican Vacation disappear?

Let me just say, that Streets song where he goes, 'Fuck this mobile phone' is the mood I have been in the last few days.

Anyway when I was living in the Evil Heat I had to drive 25 minutes to a site for work and hated every fucking second of it, now I have to go out to Astoria, and ride the subway, and it takes about the same amount of time and while it might be crowded and there is always a threat that poison gas or a bomb going off at any minute, I rather really like it. As far as public transportation goes. Only losers take the bus. That's a song Marky so don't get upset.

And I hate cars, but love Taxis. Hmmm, maybe I'm not so shallow. Maybe I'm deep after all, complicated, complex, multi- faceted...I'd think about the meaning of all this if I gave a toss.

Where is Sloth indeed?!?!?! I was just about to start a thread asking that very question.

Commuting totally sucks. Not only is it bad for you, it's bad for the environment. Actually the bus is far more suited to where I work than a car could ever be (my work is right next to the Mariners stadium, so when there are games...Jesus...have you ever dealt with that? Even just trying to get your car past all the walking baseball fans crossing the street is murder!). I was thrilled when I found that there's a bus I can take just for commuters that will get me down to downtown (and back) in about 20 minutes each way. It's incredible.

I'm proud to say I haven't even been out to the eastside in a few years, now, and I used to go out there every single day.

Also, regarding TP's dilemma: I guess there's something to be said for just being upfront and telling your dad, but if it were me, I would probably just go without saying a thing, honestly. Then if he freaks out later, just act all calm and cool like it's the most normal thing in the world. Are you over 18? I mean, you must be if you're talking about dorms...and if so, I'd say you have should feel you have some firm ground to stand on regarding your parents. They're the ones who are going to have to get used to it.

Do you think you would get thrown out if you told him? I mean what's the worst that could happen?

He'll kill me (not kidding), I could wake up to find my passport "missing" and my bank accounts mysteriously "emptied"... Did I mention he'll kill me. Imagine it... 300lb man vs. 120lbs young girl...

I dunno, I am 18 so you know, in the end short of doing the drastic and irrational things he's known for he can't stop me. (Which you know, really makes me want to come home eh?) Which is why I got the tickets and everything finalised because basically it's all paid for so should he empty my bank account I'll just to worry about eating and my shopping habits since everything else is good. You have no idea how much of an ass my dad is. This is the man who told his daughter who was hospitalised for an eating disorder she needed to run around the block after her aunt told her she had a nice figure after gaining 20lbs. (Granted, when I was 70 something lbs I did need it but eh).

This is tommy here. TP glad that you are going to the UK (although nobody there ever calls it that) Get my e-mail off McCutcheon or Sloth and send me a message. If you like I will inform my sister in London that you are headed that way. If you get really stranded she will help you out. It is always useful to have a local contact. If you head to the north of england I can probably get you some names and addresses but they would be of lustful forty year old men. Don't know how long you are staying in Europe or how much cash you have got but medical insurance is always a good bet if you can swing it.

Thanks Tommy. I already have some contacts though... my ex is English sooo... umm... he's there... and yeeeah.
and I'm not sure where I'm gonna go or how long either. There is of course a little idea I have of simply not coming home at all. We'll see though.
