The mighty Nelson

Post by Tommy Martyn » Mon Sep 11, 2006 11:11 pm

Some of you here are familiar with the mighty Nelson. The big Bulmastiff with an even bigger heart. Today it was confirmed that his lameness was not due to an ACL injury but bone cancer. The story is that painkillers will give him 2-3 good months. If at any time it is obvious that the cancer has spread to his internal oragans then that number is radically shortened.

I well aware that big dogs have short lives. Nelson is coming up on his 8th birthday but today was still a kick in the teeth. Poor Marky called me about five minutes after I found out. I had to put the phone down because I couldn't talk.

Yes that big dog is smarter and cooler than most people I have met.

Wow, really sorry to hear that tony. I agree with sloth. I'd rather hang out with nelson than most people! I hope his good times are very good.

In about an hours time I take Nelson off to his final appointment. The cancer in his leg is ballooning. He isn't suffering yet (he is on heavy meds) but you have to do this before he gets to that point. I lay on the floor this morning and he came and sat on me. For once I didn't mind getting crushed. Man, I will miss him.

i'm sorry about that, tommy.

i'll never forget coming home one year and my parents' dog --this sweetheart of a yellow lab -- god she looked horrible. she was eaten up and she stunk. she had sores all over her. my parents loved her so much they couldn't tell she hadn't gotten that bad off. it was like they were blind to it. i told them you've got to take her to the vet. it was so hard for them to do, but it was the right thing.

it was years before they would even talk about getting another dog.

i'm sorry for you. i know it's tough.

Well the trip to the vets office wasn't too bad. They asked me if I wanted to go in and I declined. (I had my daughter with me) so we just said goodbye in the foyer. I was ok for the rest of the day, until I got back home and I saw his food and water bowls on the kitchen floor. I had to sneak off to the bathroom so the kids wouldn't be freaked out by my crying.

A few weeks ago I had a goodbye party for Nelson. I'm not sure the same amount of people would show up for me.

I am sorry to hear about your doggie, Tommy. I know firsthand that losing a pet can be very hard.

I'm sorry you had to go through all this, but it sounds like you did the right thing and Nelson didn't suffer too much. And, you had a party for him!
