NEW YORK (AP) -- At first glance Patrick Rafter appears in his prime, playing with uncommon flair and grace that allows him to make tennis look easy, as he did at times Monday at the U.S. Open.

A small gray patch in his short black hair is the only evidence of the toll nine years on the men's tour has taken. The 28-year-old Rafter is weary of the grind and looking forward to a six-month break that might turn into retirement.

The laid-back Australian was asked what he loves these days about tennis.

``That it's nearly finished,'' he responded.

But Rafter hopes to keep playing during the next two weeks. On the first day of perhaps his final Grand Slam tournament, the two-time Open champion eliminated American Bob Bryan 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-5.

``He's playing great,'' Bryan said. ``He can go for a good five more years.''

That's not likely. Rafter announced in January that he would take a break -- perhaps permanently -- at the end of 2001. His plan hasn't changed, even though he was the runner-up to Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon and reached the finals in three tournaments this month, winning at Indianapolis.

``I don't want to be around tennis for a while and see how much I miss it, if I do or not,'' Rafter said.

Meanwhile in other tennis, McCutcheon, who proir to today has been 16-0 during the Seattle summer public park circuit, won again against Ralph. The winner was taken to a free lunch of sushi and sake.

This is McCutcheon's first U.S. Open.

There are 12 Frenchmen in the US Open and they all seem to be losing.

well Grande (who is a double tall to me) lost to Shaughnessy (the coffee) bean pole in a tie break. Why do all the hot girls lose out in the early rounds. It seems you can judge a players talent in women's tennis by how homely they are. Davenport could win it all. I don't want to be mean, so I'll shut up right now. I just like a bit of flash.

The William sisters dominate in doubles. Tommy Haas is playing his best hard court tennis after a victory over Pistol Pete in a tournament last week. I love Germans named Tom.

Today on The Arthur Ash court McCutcheon beat The Sloth 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in 2hours and 2mins. It's not that McCutcheon over powered The Sloth with his serve or his forehand, it's just that The Sloth had some trouble getting to a few shots. Sloths aren't know for being the fastest on the court.

I always knew that Russians were a little different, well, yes okay who am I trying to kid, they are crazier than a shit house rat, whatever that means. I mean I have had the pkeasure of meeting Olga a few times. Wow lucky me. And then there is Esi. So now here comes E.Koulikovskaya who literally doesn't have a backhand. She switches the racket from left to right and back again!!!! How does she play, well she has a super fit nice body that is running all over the court but M.Seles is really beating up on her (sort of how I beat up on the Sloth earlier in the day). In the 'getting to know you' profile they showed before the match the young Russian said Monica was her hero. And the way she started hitting like that was because they ddin't play tennis where she lived, so she olny had a second hand racket and tattered balls she would hit against a wall. Why does this all make me sad? I'm too sensitive for the sport of women's tennis.
