So I'm leaving the week of the 22nd of May and I'll be around the first week of August.
Lovely SO has a place in probably Leamington - the question is, should I get a work visa and a job ... or sit on my arse all summer? SO has little helpful to say on this; it would be so much easier if he were like a normal person and said "I'm not having you sit on your arse and eat all my food" ... but he essentally said he doesn't care I don't need to work. Should I work?
If I don't work what will I do ... I'd say write, and this is always possible, but may be unlikely.
Also - does anyone know if you need to have a job lined up to get a work visa or not? (Yes, I know I can go look this up, but I'm too damn lazy at the moment)

The only way to get to know a place is to surround yourself with people who don't care about your well being. I'm not sure about work permits and such. Get a job and meet the natives. Don't sit round on your arse. If you want to scout a place out to see if at some future point you may want to live there, then stay in one place and really get to know it. Visiting 20 tourist spots will give you nice memories but won't tell you much.
