so, where and what is Cairns? it's a small holiday town, popular with backpackers, on the east coast of australia. We're only 20 miles from the most diverse eco-system on the planet, being the great Barrier Reef. we're also pretty close to other world heritage environmental treasures, like rainforests where trees that dinosaurs ate still grow strong. Over the last 10 years , Cairns has played host to a growing number of lost young things, and a few people have done a great deal to make sure these lost tourists have at least something to remind them of home. Inovators such as Scotty from Hysteria Productions and Shaun De Bauch from the Silky Crew have laid on a a never ending series of club nights, full moon beach raves and parties to keep the mainly transient population in full party mode. On a good night out, you could be in london or berlin- there's no cultural refferance points in a ciarns crowd. one minute you're boshing with a Mancunian punk drummer turned raver, the next you're deep in conversation with a Systems administrator from Sydney, and by seven AM you're at an invites only house party with some guy who has to go and teach people how to scuba dive in two hours. It doesn't matter where you're from, it's all where you're at.
With so many people in a town on holidays, you can rest assured that we know our shit when it comes to banging the top off it. The law is not on our side, so much of the promotion around town is the classic underground word of mouth. If someone hands you a flyer, it's either for a commercial club or a god-damned bust. If a Kombi full of feral looking hippies gives you a ride back from the beaches and invites you to a gathering, go... that's where the action is. Brand new tunes, hot off napster. DJ's mixing tunes you hardly recognise. pills that no-one can name, but everyone is up on. Mad podium crew, shirts off, sweats on, bouncing up and down on a rock by a stream in a rainforest with 20k sound systems keeping the wildlife awake for ten miles in any direction. Smokey nightclubs doing quiet , once a month "nights". sound systems on a beach, 1000 ppl doofing in the sand. Thyat's Cairns. A local scene where creativity is respected, where a DJ might follow 808 state with something some guy whipped up on a playstation the night before. anything at all, as long as it's working. Noone saying no. massage chains after the parties. champagne, charlie and choons. this is the deep north, this is Cairns. drop in sometime, we've always got room for one more smiling face.
