Billy Bragg "St. Swithin's Day"

Post by marky »

If you haven't heard Billy Bragg's "St. Swithin's Day" you've missed out on one of the top 10 songs ever to emerge from the British isles. Sorry. You'll never know what you missed.

I have nothing against you Maverick, as long as you admit this war was wrong and illegal. I can forgive, but don't suck Bush's military cock, it's too late to suck American military cock.

i don't understand this new fancy stuff, but thanks sloth.

mark, where the hell were you in the post you started about peace when i went on and on about maverick's position on war, you remember?

he tried to explain that no, he was not for this war from the beginning that he is and was for the use of the military in the pursuit of terrorists under certain conditions

although a hell of a lot of people who are really gung-ho about the military pursuing things like terrorists have never in their lives even been on a military base much less decided that it is their own ass that ought to be out there pursuing the terrorists -- if that's really what they think ought to be done or maybe if they don't want to put their own rear-ends on the line, they might just need to rethink their stance on war

and really if you look at the explanation, it's impossible to distinguish the difference between this war and that pursuit of terrorists, you know what i mean, uh-hum, the vietnam CONFLICT, not the vietnam WAR, heaven forbid we called it what it is.

(and maverick, i've got to thank you for that wonderful well-spun explanation because i used it already with the kiddos in one of my lessons on connotation and how politicians use the connotations of words to manipulate their listeners/audience members without technically telling a lie -- it's military pursuit of enemies, not war. it's the vietnam conflict, not the vietnam war -- that was great for that lesson~!)

"Did we learn anything from fucking Vietnam? EH? Did we?"

and that is why i love you, mark, because yes, this past week at school, we as in my students did learn from vietnam they also learned from maverick. and of course we learned from our favorite, mlk.

we're studying autobiographies and biographies -- that's our unit, so we got mlk and the power of nonviolence and his life history on september 11th, and i asked my kids, have we really learned anything from mlk whose house was bombed and whose friends came with guns to get those kkk assholes back? have we learned anything from the man who said to his friends with guns, i'm sorry my friends but if we use an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth then we'll have a nation that is blind and unable to speak. and the kids again this year, agreed with mlk. but then they were really kind of quiet and thinking and after a bit said, no we haven't learned much from him since metaphorically speaking, our house got bombed on september 11th and we used violence to meet violence and . . .

anyways i love it when you appear to be posting incoherently, mark. it makes me laugh and thank god that someone here is not a well behaved or depressed adult -- otherwise we'd have to ask sloth to also change the name of this place, not just the security shit, to the well-mannered nearing middle aged midlife crisis board (bored)

i like "we the sheeple," the expression not the meaning behind it. sheeple is one of my favorite words when i'm pissed, it's like "fucking __________ !" you know? it just gets the job done.

pixie, i miss ya but i hope you're happy. :)

For the record, maverick's response to war, should we have done it or not?

“As for my "being for the war from the beginning", that is untrue. If you will look back, I said clearly that I did not agree with the manner in which the american (Bush) government was ignoring the advice and opinions of our allies . . . Do I wish that Bush had listened to other leaders, formed a stronger coalition, and pursued terrorists on other fronts, perhaps eventually including Iraq, yes.â€￾

So he never answered the question DIRECTLY -- I tried to point out to him and anyone else who was unclear about it that pursuing terrorists on other fronts and eventually Iraq is what we did when we went from pursuing terrorists in Afghanistan to eventually pursuing them in IRAQ, AND MOST PEOPLE HAVE CALLED THAT WAR

I'M NOT TRYING TO FIGHT WITH YOU EITHER MAVERICK, BUT GET OFF THE FENCE, WAR OR NO WAR

WHAT SAYS YOU?

Um...no...I mean...remember? Me? Honey sometimes things happen on this board that I don't bloody remember, I'm sorry, but it's true. You can be sure of that.

Look, all I want to know is can we start a fight about it on this board with someone, whether it's Maverick or someone else? Can we PLEEEZ start a fight about it? Just for fun?

Can we stick it to the arse-licking Powell-supporting mother fuckers on this board just to jazz things up a bit?

SOOO funny to see Powell of all people in the news the other day, actually (finally!) taking a stand against the idiot Bush cock he sucked for years eh? "On your knees, Powell" Bushie said and got his wish when Powell went in front of the U.N. and lied, making his little demonstration in support of the Iraq war. Oh poor Powell, we say now, right? Oh poor little Poor Little Innocent Powell who remained silent all those years like a good little Republican military cocksucker eh? Where was he three years ago the fucking chicken!!!!! I-D-I-O-T!

PLease god, let Hillary Clinton wipe these fuckers up with her almighty MOP-O-MATIC.

I need another drink. And I love you Sarah. Don't forget it.

And before anyone knee jerks and calls me racist what happened to that popular cool black male Democratic candidate with the strange name starting with a B? I can't remember it right now. See, sometimes I just can't remember.

I'm playing Magazine now but the Suburbs will definitely be on my CD player by dawn.

Getting sober now, reading the rest of your message, Sarah..

and of course we learned from our favorite, mlk.

The imporant thing is that U2 have a great song called MLK on their album The Unforgettable Fire which was produced by Brian Eno. Right. CON-TIN-UE!

mark. it makes me laugh and thank god that someone here is not a well behaved or depressed adult -- otherwise we'd have to ask sloth to also change the name of this place, not just the security shit, to the well-mannered nearing middle aged midlife crisis board (bored)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Well Iggy Pop has a song that goes "I'm Bored/I'm the Chairman of the Bored" and John Lydon has a part of his website called the "Message Bored" so hahahahahahah

Someday soon I will face Pixie again, but a great lot will have changed, for now I am no longer a student and she still is. This hurts me somehow. It was a huge part of our telephone conversations and connection, that her and I were both in hell slogging it out with books and pens/pencils/computers. If she's even reading this I can only say that there is an end, darling. You do eventually reach the end. But I also know that in reality you (Pixie) have a lot more on your plate than just school. So maybe I shouldn't talk.

Sorry one more quote from Sarah which I've only now been sober enough to read (it's amazing what happens when your grass connection suddenly deprives you for two weeks):

it's a collective name for areas like sterling, falls church, manassas, etc. which are bedroom communities of dc (it's an area i can't stand. over priced shit houses that are right on top of someone else's over priced shit house, i'm talking half a million for a peice of crap, no trees, and a mandatory applebee's in every neighborhood) -- i think it could be the center of the strip mall universe -- i'm sorry i wasn't very clear about that. it's not in pennsylvania, but it is where the doomed family trip started.

Jesus you don't know how sorry I am to hear that. I mean...all I know is I used to love driving through those places on the highway. So much green...everywhere...humidiity and green and rain and green...and heat...I love that part of the country, I'm sorry. Climate-wise I have good memories which may not even be true anymore. Also there were good record stores there a long time ago...

Why am I thinking of Pee Wee Herman all of a sudden? I need another drink. I'm outta here.

i think we just remember what we're interested in. that's a theory, not a fact.

so powell. i wish the hubby was here today; he's not he's at the fire station. he saw a few years ago what appeared to be a colin caught on camera moment (like bush making blair talk to the back of his head about israel and hezbollah -- as if blair was his bitch -- while he sucked the grease off his fingers and made that brilliantly obvious remark that "someone ought to get them to stop doing this shit". . . ya think? dumbass)

i don't remember all the details, but it's just this weird story of powell trying to tell the press the truth and some chick that he called out by name trying to turn the camera away from him and shut him up, and he's like "jenny" get out of the way, stop. i don't know what the hell happened but he was trying to come clean with something then on national tv, and the powers that be pulled the plug on it -- bizarre country we live in, bizarre media, makes you think -- i'll ask the hubby about it later.

yeah, i know about certain areas around nova, that was and still to a certain extent is horse farm country.

to me, it's the kudzu that makes it so beautiful here in the summer, which i think is weird. this terrible weed/ vine that is essentially the roach/rat of plant life makes a great deal of the state green and beautiful.

where i live is still like what you described. i go walk for a couple of miles every evening. two, two and half miles and pass no cars, walking in a tobacco farm mainly, and where there isn't tobacco there are trees and ponds and creeks and barns. the hills kind of roll with all the green. it is unbelievably peaceful. my friends go do yoga, i'm like why? i can walk out here for free.

but the problem is as tobacco becomes less and less popular, farmers sell off their land to folks who want to build subdivisions. loggers come in and strip the land and then up go the houses. they are talking about doing it on one side of "the mountain" where i live.

we have so many buildings in town that are fine, beautiful, just being wasted b/c of what tommy mentioned, we call it white flight -- stupidity. yet people want to bring the ugliness of crammed up housing and stripped land and convenience markets out here. they don't want to come out here and take care of this place. they want to come out here and take advantage of this place. (there is song by pj called do the evolution. i think about it all the time when i'm sad about our country, which not surprisingly was written by stone the silent environt one and eddie:
I'm a piece of the man.
I buy stocks on the day of the crash.
On the loose. I'm a truck.
All the rolling hills I'll flatten 'em out.
It's herd behavior. Uh huh.
It's evolution baby.
Admire me, admire my home, admire my son, he's my clone.
This land is mine, this land is free, I'll do what I want, yet irresponsibly.
It's evolution baby.
I'm a thief. I'm a liar.
There's my church I sing in the choir.
Hall-le-lu-jah.
Admire me, admire my home, admire my song, admire my clothes.
Consider, appetite for nightly feasts.
Those ignorant Indians got nothing on me.
Nothing. Why? Because, it's evolution baby.)

it breaks my heart and makes me wish that it was al gore, not hilary who had a chance. not that hilary does.

i did recently hear he was thinking of running. . . which is not what he said earlier . . .so dunno.

Sarah, when did this Powell thing with the camera happen?

Also you might be amused to learn that my new job turned out to be at a non-profit that helps seniors, can you believe it? Kindof funny how it all came together in the end. I always said I wanted to be an accountant in some type of social service organization, but as time went on I didn't see any reason why I couldn't be just as happy somewhere else. So I applied to a variety of jobs, only a very small portion were social service related (but mostly that's cause there just weren't as many of those jobs available as other things). For awhile I felt bad about it because I had a chance at this other job at a for-profit company too, and I didn't want to doom myself to non-profit work for the rest of my life and I wanted to get my CPA which the for-profit company was willing to help pay for. But in the end something happened that totally turned me off to the for-profit position (which wasn't going to pay me that much more than the non-profit, actually) and so now I'm totally happy that somehow by some weird twist of fate, I've found myself actually doing what I always said I wanted to do. And I'm happy to be finally free of job search hell, too.

I went to an antiwar protest before the war started. Cydney was there. Whatever happened to her? She was so sexy in a grade school teacher kind of way.
