Christmas and new years

Post by Tommy Martyn »

Let me just say on this board, in the public domain, that one of my christmas presents to myself and also one of my New Years resolutions is to talk to Marky on the phone on a regular basis. We have had some top chats recently.

Ideally, it would be the same time once a week. I could moan about my kids and he could tell me why some new band were great - but not quite as good as some half forgotten band of latvian trumpeters from the late eighties.

Marky my man, I'll see you on the phone.

Wonderful to hear from you Tony! (why the hell I always hear your name in my head in a certain accent I can't explain, I'm not even sure if it's your *own* accent!)

I really was so horribly drunk the last time I left you messages. I'd had a really fun night, nothing really went wrong, but I was so drunk I thought I was going to be sick. Don't know how I made it to work Monday morning. Thank god I didn't have a headache.

Also I'm really sorry if you tried to call me Tony. I've had some downloading to get done which has required the use of my phone line. But I will be finished soon. We will work it out. Oh god that's a Beatles lyric. SHut Up marky! hahaha

god I think I'm even going to listen to some post punk here in a minute. I haven't done that in awhile, aside from the Pretenders a little bit. Pretenders albums are so goddamn spotty though, you really have to comb to get to the good songs with them I think. One weird thing I noticed though was that Chrissie Hynde was wearing those lacy fingerless gloves like Madonna used to wear, only it was 1979. Maybe those things first happened in London at McLaren's shop or something but I really associate those gloves pretty exclusively with the 80's.

Oh yeah - everyone here knows that Chrissie married the singer of Simple Minds at one time right? Okay I thought so. Just checking. I can see that picture from the NME in my mind so clear it's like I could reach out and touch it, though I don't have it anymore. I remember the color...

What the hell am I saying, haven't listened to post punk in awhile...I listened to Death In June last night but I guess they are not really post punk because it's from 1985 so never mind. They are probably the most classic goth band in history as far as I'm concerned. "Nada" sounded like absolutely nothing else at the time and it STILL sounds like nothing else.

Okay end of rant.

Hey do you like Squeeze at all? I never thought I'd like them in a million years but "Cool For Cats" is really an excellent album. Echo & the Bunnymen played here recently but I didn't go. Because I had exams to study for and it cost money. Although I MIGHT have gone if I'd remembered it after I found out my exam was put off, which really threw me off for some days. I couldn't tell you what the last Echo & B. album sounded like though. My problem with them has always been that Ocean Rain beats the hell out of everything else in their career. Sorry.

Anyway. Have I covered everything yet? I hope so. Jesus I need to put on some music and quit all this typing.

My friend Paul from Essex likes to feed my cat real catnip from his garden and my cat loves it.

In fact, here is a picture of my cat:

Also I actually did see Echo & Bunnymen once in the mid 80's so it wasn't a tragedy to miss them now.

Also you can't really be a goth without a copy of Death In June's album "Nada" which you can even get on CD I'm told.

It is so absolutely weird and 19th century one minute and then more contemporary spooky electronic dance music the next.

Here's what the album cover looks like:

Also anyone who likes James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, or just late 60's funky instrumental jazz with organ sounds, you should check out this new band I read about in the Stranger by one of the few music journalists I really like. I don't think they're from Seattle but they're called Breakestra. They just do FUNK man, like it used to mean in the early 70's and such. It's great, and somehow manages not to be too derivative of other classic funk that it stops you enjoying it or shaking your arse. Although I was never a fan of Funkadelic/George Clinton, so I can't speak to that side of it. I also don't like that "go-go" sound of Trouble Funk very much. It's too slow that style, it tries to slow funk down to a reggae time signature or something and it just doesn't work for me.

Anyway the band is called Breakestra, and the album is called "Hit The Floor". The guitar on the first track alone "Stand Up" is really extraordinary. If you need to make people dance McC when you're DJing...

also I haven't forgotten my present to you, McC. I just haven't had the money. I know I know I spent a buttload on wine but you see they're running out of my favourite wine, every fcking shop in town is running out of it *weeps uncontrollably* They're all telling me "it's gone" "the distributor is running out of it more and more"! I had only just fallen in love with my beloved and suddenly I can't find that shit anymore! I had to drive all the way down to south Seattle from North Seattle during rush hour to get what might be the last 9 bottles I'll ever see in my life! WAAAAH!

Damnit I promised myself I wouldn't talk about this. ARRRGH. LIFE SUCKS. THERE IS NO OTHER WINE blah blah blah get over it marky. You must go on.

"but it's the oak barrels I've decided, that's why this shit is so good it's the oak barrels it was stored in before being bottled I've figured it out"
All the normal slight bitter, dry, or sour tastes of wine were buried beneath this hint of oak and it makes me so goddman happy. hahahahahah "goddman"!!!

Oh god the sun is up. I'm still typing. When am I going to shut up once and for all and put on some music already?
