I'm not one for dates but shouldn't Martino be having some sort of blood loss incident by now? Surely he is behind for the year. He'll live forever at this rate. We only need him till the end of the world cup.

how attentive, tommy. indeed for me november has been a month of malaise for the past few years. so i am driving, drinking, walking, as a matter of fact wanking with particular care for the month being. which means i'll probably get some teeth kicked in in some unsuspected moment of february or so.

while i am writing i might as well mention that i missed the cocorosie concert last week. was it worth seeing? they say it was, though i am underwhelmed by what i have yet heard. speaking of underwhelmed, allow me to sneak in (in order to prevent marky from getting a hernia) how i think kate bush's new recording is near-unlistenable. bird-chirping noises, fake-latino grooves, vintage 1980s sounds, and songs about washing machines: this is supposed to be not good but brilliant, superb, spectacular? what's wrong with me that i don't get it?

in the meantime i might check out elbow next week but aren't they a bit too soft for the stage?

i went to the harry potter movie the other night with the daughter. they oversold tickets so we sat in the aisle and half-way through the film snapped. so much for german efficiency -- you'll be surprised how badly the country is run when you come next year. the movie isn't half bad, but is it half good? i liked the king kong trailer more, even though casting jack black looks like an accident. perhaps this is how life is for the fortunate: accidents happen, but they don't hurt, they only confuse bystanders.

Well I'm sorry if the new Kate doesn't resonate for you, Martino. There was general agreement on the other board I visit that if one wasn't a Kate fan previously, this album is unlikely to convert many folks. However I do think it's worth remembering that Kate was *always* rather loopy, therefore, bird chirping and songs about washing machines are par for the course.

thanks for the link tommy. i like the discussion but, unlike hitchens or sloth, i am not really a believer in atheism -- religion is a personal matter for me and i just don't really care that much. i think it is possible to believe in a god without being anti-truth, anti-knowledge or anti-empiricism. vice-versa, being agnostic (as i am) or atheistic doesn't make one a humanist.

i think most people muddle through well enough when you allow them to. as clinton said, when there is a war it is usually because someone is able to manipulate people to profit from conflict.

back to king kong (this is off topic but does anybody care?) it may be a cinematographically splendid three hours, and it certainly has more emotional depth than the 1930s original (well, why shouldn't it?) but it lacks that certain oompf that provides for fascination. i can't really recommend it.

since this topic is about me, let me ask you folks this. i would like to post, on a regular basis, about germany and my home town in the months preceding the world cup. this would be a kind of explanation for people who are coming, so that they would know what to expect, and a log book of the wc (damn, what a lousy abbreviation). should i put it in a blog or is there space (and demand) at paxacidus?

do you know who nelly furtado is?

i would put it more drastically and say cocorosie is what happens when you cross nelly furtado with oscar and miss piggy.

Martino - I hope you will not be offended if I ask very earnestly , out of sheer curiosity - why is it that the tiny part of the new Kate Bush album that uses a Latino style seems "fake" to you? I only ask as on the other board I visit the debate is heating up and there have been a few others who have complained that it strikes them as "inauthentic". I would just like to understand why people feel that way about it. Does it sound inferior to other flamenco style music to you? Do you just think it's poorly done, does it not fit with the rest, is it something Kate shouldn't be doing in your opinion, what is it? Does it seem that in doing that style for a few minutes that she is being pretentious?

Whatever it is, I would like to understand. Because to me it's just a style of music, you know? "Oh such and such used a reggae beat".

I also think that before you give up on the album (and I admit it is absolutely your right to do so), you might want to try "A Coral Room" again. A beautiful and extremely moving song, I think, with not much besides her and the piano. I had to listen to it many times before I could get over this awful feeling of emotional pain I associated with it. She was writing in part about the death of her mother, but she weaved it in with scenes of WWII in Kent, England. She almost didn't include it because she felt it was too personal.

Also out of pure intellectual curiosity - do you find the sound of chirping birds outside to be disagreeable and "unlistenable" as well?

oh man....
