I have to say that if you are paying for the brat, then you get to decide if they can piss your money and their life away. Teenagers have enough problems without having to deal with drugs.

If a parent has to rely on a drug-testing kit to make sure Junior and Princess are clean, there just might be a bigger problem at hand than drugs.

BTW, in twenty-two years, I never ONCE drug-tested my dogs.

I remember as a kid we used to snort snuff (tobacco) and my friend's mom thought it was heroin and took it to the police to have it analyzed. He never recovered. Has never forgiven his mom for not talking to him.

I remember my own lil' brother telling me about smoking
crack at 14 at boarding school. He now has 3 kids and a well paying job and plays in a band and still parties pretty hard.

If I remember my youth correctly, the Drug Menace is definitely overshadowed by the Nazi Parent menace.

I don't think I'd ever have actually gone to junoir high if it weren't because I wanted to get some weed.

Then again - that was jr high and I think doing drugs kept me fairly sane.
Lie to me, it takes less time to drink you pretty.

One reason I never procreated is because of the precipitous drop in IQ among various friends and acquaintances who did. "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by parenthood, raving hysterical cloaked in illusion."

Without herb, I would've blown my brains out in high school, although I'll concede my grades would have been a little better in the interim. It was my only sanctuary.

What was I thinking? Hard drugs and teenagers, it's a win/win situation.

Sloth. Your brother rolled the dice and won. Kids and crack usually don't mix so well.

Hate to point it out, but the folks posting on this thread don't seem to have considered the viewpoint of not taking the drugs. You all seem very happy with yourselves as you are now. You might be even better people and you might even be more successful and happier etc if you hadn't indulged. Also, have you considered what a pain in the arse teenagers are when they are high. You might want to look up some old chums and apologize for some of the shit you came out with back then.

I did and stated so. It was not a rhetorical, shoot-from-the-hip comment (no pun intended).

Did my drug use have negative consequence? Yes. Did it have only negative consequences? No.

Many parents are familiar with the dangers associated with drug use. Unfortunately, deleterious effects are the only ones society cares to acknowledge in this arena. Were this not true, perhaps genuine drug education would be possible rather than the "moral" fear-based Chicken Little approach, which, while counterintuitive to most adults, results in anything but harm reduction on a mass scale.

In all fairness, yes, I can envision extreme circumstances in which, as a last resort, I would drug-test my kid. I'm far from convinced that's how these kits are typically used. My suspicion is that the benefit of the wholesale commodification of drug-testing kits is significantly offset by the devastating collapse in kid-parent relations, in no small part due to absurdly overzealous parents. And if you don't think teen/parent alienation often culminates in a life-or-death risk just as heroin or cocaine or chronic glue-sniffing, well, maybe there will be a Wal-Mart kit for that, too, someday. I'd prefer to use my eyes and ears.

Tommy, I can't imagine what its like to have kids. It probably drives one to commit unspeakable acts such as drug testing them. My main point is I guess it destroys the trust.

I think the difference is love. If a kid doesn't feel any love then they are doomed whether or not they take drugs. You aside of course, I think many parents confuse security and love.

I think the way things are going, schools will drug test all kids anyway by the time the little ones are in school. So you are probably safe from having to administer the piss tests.
