WASHINGTON - Bernard Kerik, New York City's former top cop, withdrew his name from consideration to be President Bush (news - web sites)'s homeland security secretary, a victim of the embarrassing "nanny problem" that has killed the nominations of other prominent officials.

to martino:

I know a racial slur that contains something like "gook" in it-- I believe. I've heard quite a few racial slurs. And slurs for females and so on. It's weird, I remember Rosie once pointing out that even desperate sounds slurrish when applied to females at times-- I don't know. It's funny to me how people keep defining what paxacidus means, maybe it's just evolution baby.

So anyway, what's your etymology lesson on gook, and does it have anything to do with the word gobbledygook -- I didn't know if it did.

goodmorning MC

What's an embarrassing nanny problem? I've not seen that article or ever heard of such a problem?

Hey, MC,

Did you check out that list. I posted it thinking you might like it; you really liked the post I made about the time I went to see Sonia Sanchez and one of your characters is a huge fan of Bob Dylan's-- not on the subject at all -- You know I'm a little crazy, suffer from entropy of the brain or something, anyway did you check it out? I posted it for you -- although there was a howard zinn endorsement on the front page, thought sloth might like that.

The problem is, if we're talking about dubya it's all too easy to see how a nanny problem can easily become a nappy problem...

I had no idea there even was a word called "gook"! But I think it's interesting this has come up, because on the message board the other day I had described a girl as "oriental" and this guy got on my case saying it was a non-politically correct term. First time I've ever heard of that being non-pc and I'm still not sure why. I'm willing to be educated, but jeez isn't it kindof wrong to make me out to be bad when I was only looking for a word to describe her appearance? I certainly didn't MEAN to be disrespectful in any way.

House of Flying Daggers isn't House of Jealous Lovers

It's only okay to be hooked on Oriental drugs.

It is only okay to be attracted to Asians.

I've been both so I'm very PC.

Oriental is not PC.

Asians is the right word.

Don't you get it?

The mind police are after you now, Marky.

Watch what you think next time!

This week's regional catchall is next week's racial slur.

I predict by next week the word American will lose is meaning as "people from over here" and come to mean "you know, those evil motherfuckers OVER THERE"

Then no matter what we say or do, it will all be construed as racist by everyone else. Even when we blow up defenseless countries to steal oil and build natural gas pipelines so our rich can get even richer.

Well it turned out that guy was a little weirder than I would have thought. He called Dave Matthews a "fetishizer of black musicians" or some such. Man, a white guy in a band with some black guys automatically makes him a racist? Sure, whatever.

He cannot prove Dave Matthews is a racist, and I dare him to prove it.

Marky is in the house.

Dave Mathews was in the line behind me in Wallingford QFC. Henry had pissed his pants. He was only just out of diapers at the time. I took him into the store wrapped in my sweatshirt. I always joke that I was stood there thinking, "Hey,that's Dave Mathews (The race fetishizer)" and he was thinking "That poor kid stinks of piss and is wrapped in a sweatshirt." To this day I check out his albums to see if he has a song title along these lines.

I mean what a way to live to see racism and misogyny in every single situation all the time. What an easy trip to superiority to just accuse everyone of racism and prejudice.

Doonesbury was especially good today. I'm enjoying my new Roxy Music compilation.

I wanted to thank Sara for her kind words on the other thread and that she had a beer for me.

Well, I can claim to have been working in a restaurant when Dave Matthews and an entourage of people decided to go out, eat and drink and stay really late until the restaurant long since should have closed. This was right after he had been on David Letterman for the first time and had pretty much finally hit the big time. I purposely refused to make eye contact with him on his way out, though we as staff were supposed to say goodbye to the customers and be friendly. But this was a several years before I actually came to have an appreciation of his music. I got bored with it after their first two albums, though. Wouldn't even TOUCH the stuff, now.

I also bought the new Nick Cave CD today! It's got a good old fashioned Factory style textured sleeve!!!
