Get the G5 Tom...especially if you do any kind of video or sound editing. It is very fast with editing programs like Final Cut Pro. Get the dual processors if you can afford it...and I will be jealous of you. That's the system I want so that I don't have to beg friends or pay professionals every time I want to edit someo of my short films and things.

Martino,

Paxacidus.com runs on Linux. Because I don't want it to break and it is free. Linux on the server is a no-brainer, like coffee for breakfast.

On the desktop, I use Windows XP. It runs some of my favorite apps. You have to admit, for a product that they spent 5 billion dollars on it sucks, but it is better behaved on the desktop overall than anything I have ever seen. I have never seen apps so snappy and professional as run under plain old windows. Why? Development time and dollars go into windows versions.

Mac OS X deserves a look but I'm not going to pay $1,500 to try it out. Why not make a version that runs on Intel (x86) architecture? What are they afraid of? I admit I wouldn't mind trying out the new machines. A lot of geeks love them. After all, they are basically Unix boxes with a crisp and fast new GUI. Who wouldn't love that?

Linux on the desktop is missing that snappy feel that Windows apps have. It just doesn't have the dev time and professional apps that are needed to make it a contender. Flash? Dreamweaver? Photoshop?

I admit on the desktop I love Windows. There is nothing wrong with that. I am a Microsoft Certified Professional, actually, so I know the stuff pretty well and can fix anything crazy/insane that happens. I wouldn't reccommend Windows to anyone though. I would say..."You're on your fucking own mate." Because if you don't know anything about computers and you get one and expect to be able to use it then you are in form some rough times no matter what OS you get.

Linux will ultimately overtake both Mac and Windows. It is a better concept and a better way to make software. There is no 'hidden agenda' and there is nothing to fear from open source.

Martino, I promise to switch to Linux on my desktop in 5 years. Are you happy now?

I'll throw my support behind Martino and the Macs. OSX is bad ass, easier than windows to use. The whole desktop works rationally. Fuck that "My Computer" thing.
Safari is pretty slick too. You can run any of the microsoft office programs but forget about games if that's what you're into.
You will never be attacked by a virus either!

Is the dual processor really worth it??

That's my only big question these days.

The only program I really want to run is pro-tools. Maybe get a home studio set up one day.

I'm a computer illiterate. Ram, meg, what the fuck. I know nothing. I see nothing.

I think I'll gonna get the dual...but the next question is-how much to spend on memory. I've been told to buy the cheapest dual processor version-and upgrade it myself for cheaper??

Anyone?

My advice is to get the single proc and spend the rest on mind altering drugs.

Sloth has a point Tom, especially if you aren't very proficient at muddling about with the innards of a computer. The only reason you'd really need the dual processor is if you are going to be doing somehting that requires a lot of rendering, like video editing/special effects. I don't know much about Pro tools, so I don't know how much rendering or processor muscle is needed, but RAm is always a good idea if you are doing any photo/video/sound work. Of course, installing RAm is probably one of the easier things to do inside a computer, so it might save you money to buy the basic amount of RAM then buy more and upgrade it yourself. Upgrading the processor is harder, but you might be able to figure it out oo...I've never done that, but I've heard it can take a while to get it all working the way you want.

Tom, from what I know about Pro-Tools let me please give this defense:

It may seem like the most amazingly tempting creative thing to do, to get pro-tools.

But don't forget, The White Stripes got a really good old fashioned sound on their last album, production wise. I suppose *possibly* they did it with Pro-Tools, but I SERIOUSLY doubt it. I believe in recording in analog, man. I believe in the SOUND of Led Zeppelin records. The production, the open echo, the space of the studio, the intimate sound of Led Zeppelin, as an example. With all the low range included. Not to fuck with it digitally. Listening to music in a digital format is one thing, and RECORDING in it is another. Stick to the roots.

There have been a lot of very brilliant things made on little inexpensive 4-track recorders and the like...The Fall made a name for themselves in part by just recording themselves raw, etc.

This is just my own philosophy.
