I don´t get the correlation between crosses and burkas.
One is a subtle accoutrement and the other is an act of suppression.

The connection is religion. I also think burqas (god knows how I'm supposed to spell it) are symbols of female oppression. Infact, I think it's kindof ironic that I've just posted in the art section about paintings Magritte did with cloth over the faces of men and women as being unsettling.
But we shouldn't forget that there are women in the world who would very willingly wear such a contraption out of pure religious beliefs. I saw such a woman walking down the street here in Seattle as I was driving one day over a year ago (I don't drive anymore) and I thought it was very disturbing and attention getting. I dunno, dude, those Muslim people have just got to either figure it out for themselves, or...not. We won't get anywhere trying to make laws against such things, unless we also ban symbols of all other religions at the same time.

I mean, we could postulate that perhaps she was doing it because her abusive boyfriend said she had to...but I still think there are women who would willingly do it, and anyway, she was alone. They don't even allow women to be alone in those countries out in public, do they?

What about turbans? Can they wear turbans? Are turbans a sign of oppression? In case you haven't noticed I really enjoy the word 'turban'.

What about Jawas? When are they going to be able to breathe free?

Religion?
I thought we had ascertained that there was no mention of burkas in the Koran?
At least there is a mention of crosses in the Bible.
In case I am accused of being anti-Islam or something... I for one don't think that Islam is more stupid than any other religion.

Yes they can wear a turban as long as they don't wear a burka on top of it.
In England you don't have to wear a crash helmet if you wear a turban. When sikhs play cricket matches they are allowed to remove their Turban, they tie a rag in their hair during the game. (Sorry if the rag has a holy name - I don't know it) I can't think of another excuse to write turban. Sorry Brett.

That's the same as here. They can wear a turban on motorcycles with no helmet. The Indian cops wear turbans wirth badges stuck to the front and no hats. Oh Happy turban days. Thank you come again.

The French should ban Hermes scarfs and watch the heads roll.

good one MC -- a long time ago when I was a serious student, I wrote a poem that started They bound up her arms with an Hermis scarf -- the poem ended very badly so I won't put anymore of it here.
