ok, i am reading this novel that mc wrote, and i am reading it for the fucking third or fourth time (or fifth?)

and this is what's funny: this is supposed to be work. i am sitting in my office, with a red pen in hand, and reading the damn manuscript, smoking some strong tobacco, enjoying the fine weather, listening to a lalo schiffrin cd, and enjoying myself.

i don't normally repeat-read books. there are some exceptions to this rule but they are exceptional: amis, nabokov, bellow. (i often like to relook at movies, especially ones in which steve mcqueen has a prominent role, and of course i listen to my favorite cd's dozens or hundreds of times, but books... no not really).

so thank you mc for some enjoyable hours. i am not yet saying your book is going to be a success or that it is a work of fucking art but it is fun and seems to be publishable.

and that goes a long way.

Thanks Martino. All I ever wanted was to provide some entertainment. It's not supposed to be a masterpiece or a classic. It's supposed to be what topless sunbathing beauties read while at the beach.

I've made some progress now? I hope so. I've been sweating my ass off to make it seem like a piece of cake. Of course, when IT IS PUBLISHED, I'll say I wrote it in a day, on a train, while getting head. Never let them see you sweat.

Oh yeah, and in a month it'll be time for number 6.

Tommy Martin and his wife are also reading it. That will be a test of our friendship. Hopefully she'll be able to handle the soft pornic. See, this morning on one of those annoying tv shows they have (I was flipping channels trying to find the tennis) they were interviewing the woman who wrote Sex In the City. She has a new book out she's promoting. And she sure didn't seem very bright. So maybe there is a chance for me!

So I'm grinning ear to ear thanks to Martino very kind words (not to mention all the effort he has put in for me) and I'm ready to work on the novel. I decide to work work work instead of watching the tennis over at Mav's house. But before I do I check my email and get this gem:

You can't write and your mixes really are shit. Try turning your levels down a little.

I've wasted too much time on you pair of trust fund babies already. Hopefully daddy's yacht will crash into some rocks with you on it.

xx droow

Your Dad has a Yacht? We should sail it to the South Pacific, drink rum and fish for Marlin. Actually, fishing sounds like a lot of work. We'll just drink rum and run a aground on some island that's populated with nympho island girls. They need us for genetic diversity, it's for the greater good.

I think that quote should be on the book jacket when the novel is published. If I saw that at the bookstore, I'd pick it up and look at the book, then read the first sentence to see if it grabbed me...would it?

It's all about the first sentence, words of wisdom from Mav.

The first sentence is now -- 'Mav is a great guy.'
