I read a statistic recently in one of my books that said that about 35% of books sent out for the public's consumption get returned by retailers due to lack of sales. Do you think that's true or is that false?

i'm sure that's true. a sad state of affairs i'd say.

Yeah they get returned. And then they are either pulped or discounted to half price vendors.

often publishers merely require the bookshops to tear off the cover and send it back as proof of non-sale. this way, postage costs are saved; it doesn't matter who pulps a book.
at least, that used to be the common method but i don't know whether they still do it that way. back in the eighties, i bought a few hundred cover-less books from guys on times square for a few cents apiece... illegal but good if you're poor

Hey I'd be happy just to get published.

Well, artistic integrity and financial stability are more or less oxymorons when talking about the publishing and writing business, unless you're Stephen King of course. Although these two endeavors, which I know nothing about, need to be reformed to some degree. Am I on the right trail at all Martino? I know most of my literary heroes struggled to maintain a balance between making bodies of work, and getting people to publish their bodies of work, let alone presenting material during their respected time in history that would touch a large percentage of the population that still gave a shit about the lost art of writing. That's the literature I look for. Mc and Sloth's writings present to me a new flash of light. However, in the case of writing and publish, comparisons are odious.
