The Privilege of Being

If you've not read this poem it is excellent especially when you look at it with Sartre's Being and Nothingness in mind and wonder did robert hass realize he was writing a reaction to this or is it just coincidental.

Also The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a great novel and it makes me wonder if there really is anything truly original in writing because everything is influenced by something else. For instance, Sartre's Being and Nothingness is said to obviously be influenced by Martin Heidegger's Being and Time-- it's like once you've read or seen something that someone else created can you ever go back to a blank slate state and create without being influenced by it. Which is why I think the philosopher/teacher/preacher qoheleth of ecclesiastes is hard to argue with -- “there is nothing new under the sunâ€￾ he said, and I think he was right.
