Tonight

Post by Tom »

I am going to revisit one from the past.

My old, torn, yellow copy of Herman Hesse 'beneath the wheel'

I remember my english teacher in 9th grade giving it to me-and telling me-"I'm recomending you for AP English-but you need to read this book before you go...there are more things to life than education. I think you lay awake at night and can't ever sleep because you think too much..you worry too much. I know this about you. You speak to no one, you have no friends. You need to start living life. You need to get away from here and be who you want to be. You can't be this person here...this place won't allow you"

I didn't believe him until 3years later when I left for college. And boy ....did I start to live life then...making up for 18years of my head always turned down and shoulders slumped. 18 and going to college in LA. The hollywood hills ... no place for a boy who had never been to a party..never had friends...never had a drink. The transformation of the duckling began. The stories...oh god the stories.. late parties...the famous and their closeted kisses, the sycophants...

Life was a mess-a swirling chaotic jumble of fear and love and loss and desire and hope and poverty and....shit-life was so fucked up and raw that it was incredible!!!!

but that my friends, is a story best saved for another day.

And so ends another digression brought to you by Tom.

Doesn't Tom look a bit like Jack Kerouac in that photo?

And doesn't Martino look a bit like Stephan Merchant co-writer and co-creator of The Office?

Tom has Kerouac-ish features though.

But he doesn't look destroyed-by-benzydrine-and-alcohol-ish enough though to be anything but a young football Kerouac.

Funny how you saw that.

He never knew how to be a father to me.....

I begged him not to go on that trip....but he said - "son..it's something I've got to do".

I never saw the bastard again.
