Mark's little Nietzsche thread
Mark's little Nietzsche thread
I just want a little tiny Nietzsche thread, that's all. I won't write a dissertation on him or anything, just a little. You lot who aren't interested or who are baffled or just don't care can feel free to steer clear. I just want a little tiny Nietzsche thread, that's all.
I have finally reached that moment where he famously writes that God is dead. It isn't so much that he writes this, but what leads up to it and what he writes *afterward*. I guess I just feel that if you are a Christian, please don't read The Gay Science. I have read some things this week, in a mere 5 minute period on the bus with so many other commuters, that would make the average Christian's blood boil and have made my own jaw drop in honest shock, even as an atheist. Sometimes Nietzsche just doesn't make much sense. And other times he writes something that's just...shockingly and even poetically rebellious.
Nietzsche cracks the skull of humanity wide open, so that it is almost is free to fly like a bird.
Also it has seemed to me, if it weren't for Darwin coming along before him, Nietzsche would have been put to death? Am I wrong Sloth? Darwin's Origin of the Species was 1859 and Nietzsche's The Gay Science was 1882.

Put to death? Nietzsche lived in Germany. I don't think you could be put to death in Germany in the 18th century for saying God was dead. It was quite an enlightened country in the literary / educated circles.
Besides I think Darwin was a Christian. I'm not sure that would helped. People in the USA still doubt Darwin (his writing make no sense to me for instance... natural selection lacks something very important) .
People probably just thought Nietzsche was poor and crazy and I don't think people took him seriously until his evil sister betrayed his work to the Nazis. He was a philologist. A lover of words. We don't even have those any more do we? Poets are all we have left (take a bow Kitten).
Martino? What's your take? He's your compatriot. I have never heard of anyone taking offense to Nietzsches words. Philosophers often ignore his work and call him a poet. Others like me love him and call Kant a boring cunt.

Well, when my philosophy teacher was first introducing him to us, she described him as a sort of rebel. I can definitely see why some people would be offended by some things he wrote, even if just in the sense that they misinterpreted his meaning (at times, it is all too easy to do). I've found it really helps to read the introduction and footnotes that the translator wrote to try to get a grip with on what is being said and how it fits in to the rest of his body of work. Normally, though, in such a book, I wouldn't even bother reading the translator's comments.
I have also felt Darwin's theory was lacking something for a long time. Not sure what, but just something intuitive tells me so.

slothy -- shamefully, i have no take on nietzsche. nothing at all.
really: as regards schopenhauer, nietzsche, wittgenstein and popper, i shot my wad a long time ago, but nothing stuck (if you will excuse my unsavory figure of speech). even when i was fucking this girl who was a brilliant assistant prof in analytical philosophy, i was thinking: i really don't know what i am doing here. c'est tout, mon ami.

McCutcheon's Monosexual Wanderings
Monosexuality is wanting to have sex with only one gender but some say that it is wanting to have sex with only one person regardless of gender. I guess, any way you take it, it can be gay, but who cares anyway? Hedonism is still the name of the game.
Nietzsche should be on the bus...
Just to add....
Nietzsche is also a lover of music as everyone her in PA is. He once said: "Without music, life would be a mistake." which I think is true. Imagine life without music.

Deaf Music
Maybe the deaf have their music too. It's just that we haven't listened to it yet or we are just deaf to their music.
All right, all right, I can't take the guilt anymore. I realize this thread is a bit old now, but I neglected to acknowledge borg's fine contributions to this thread. In my defense I can only claim shyness, which is pretty silly online isn't it?
Maybe I just needed another drink.
Anyway, even McC turns philosophical here. It's great.
And yes, it has not escaped my attention at all that Nietzsche was quite the music lover. This knowledge just reminds me from time to time that I must be reading the right man's words!
Life a sexually transmitted disease. I like that, too.
And Csexy mentions Beethoven, the deaf musician, at just the right time. No, this is a great thread, period. Thanks all!
