I take the blame, here, it is me. I had a well-thought out post ready to be posted just after Martino first shared his thoughts just after Tommy did, and in the end, I decided to say nothing instead, dreading the conflict that would ensue. I waited to see how the thread would turn out without me putting in my two cents, and alas, it has not turned out as I might have hoped. So it's my fault, people. Really. I take the blame.

Luckily, Kitten did reveal herself favorably in retrospect, when she admitted: "it is of no relevance to ME then- i don't know much about his life, or care, i just like his music." But at the time I wrote this, I could only guess at her answer to my fundamental question:

Well, I'm of a conflicted mind on this one. I do recall there being discussions here on this board before involving "art vs. the artist" and the importance of observing separation between the two. I do believe Tommy/guest is capable of separating art and artist. (BTW, there really ought to be a secret agent character on T.V. called Tommy Guest, played by Mav of course)

But when I go back and read Kitten's indisputably fawning words further upthread about Kurt Cobain, I can easily see how Tommy (especially knowing Tommy) would want to punch a hole in that kind of glorification of someone who was really (apart from his art) just a heroin addict who abandoned his kid. Tommy might well ask (and if he doesn't, I'm asking it) - why is a heroin addict who abandoned his wife and kid your 'favorite person in the world', Kitten? Perhaps it is merely Cobain's art that causes you to speak of him in such glowing terms, but if so, perhaps you should think about drawing the same distinction I know Tommy is capable of drawing: between art and artist.

Perhaps it is not in fact, Cobain's art that primarily drives you to profess he is 'your favorite person in the world' but more something to do with your being far too used to being mistreated by your father. If that's the case, well, that's how you feel, I guess. But I do very much agree with Martino that the sooner you realize your father was an out and out asshole for whom no excuses can, should or need to be made the better off you will be in the long run. I'm speaking as a person who has made my own share of excuses for people that I now realize do not in any way warrant my accomodation, and that I certainly did not gain anything from accomodating them.

You father is not "one in a million" unless he treats you and your family like YOU are "one in a million". And I would be willing to guess the number of abusive fathers in the population is sadly much more common THAN one in a million. What makes HIM special? Have you thought about this?

And just for the record, I never got the impression that Tommy was saying he felt the poem was absolutely and positively about Kurt Cobain, the way you seem to think.

well my dad was never really abusive to ME- he just beat my mom up. and why blame my probs on my dad?; he can't help the fact he got a druggie-fuck-up for a daughter ha.
