NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines (news) made about President George W. Bush (news - web sites) during a recent performance in London.

Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."


Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.


The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq (news - web sites) and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."


In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

I agree with xquisid3, why even bother mentioning texas? there is not a single valid reason for it. But in other news, a bunch of country radio stations are banning their songs this weekend. I find that quite amusing. Gives new meaning to Don't Mess With Texas.

Ah hell, more power to em. I can identify with being from a certain geographical area and not quite feeling within my element. Maybe they were just trying to get their views out in the most succint way possible. I'm sure they don't think EVERYTHING and everyone in Texas is bad.

Yes I think some from Hollywood go overboard being political spokespeople (anyone read Sean Penn's huge anti-war anti-Bush ad he took out in some big newspaper? Geez. How embarassing. His intentions were good but he really didn't write it out very well)
But then again, people from Hollywood (celebs) have a right to voice their opinions too. And if they happen to be in a position to do that on a more widely known level than average citizens, well, big deal. First amendment rights go to them as well.

I knew a girl from Texas in Paris. Not Paris, Texas. We were in a bar together and this couple tried to pick us up for a little pleasure. The guy said to me, "you are very handsome for an American." I said, "Thank you, your wife is gorgeous. How about you let her join us and you go pay the tab?"

DALLAS - Natalie Maines (news), lead singer of the Dixie Chicks (news - web sites), is finding out that sometimes saying you're sorry doesn't make much of a difference.

Radio stations nationwide are boycotting the Dixie Chicks, even though Maines publicly apologized for telling a London audience last Monday: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."


Maines is a Lubbock native.


In her apology Friday, Maines said: "As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush (news - web sites) because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect."


The words didn't carry much weight with listeners in Maines' home state and elsewhere.


"We've had a huge listener reaction and movement against the statements," said Paul Williams (news) of KPLX-FM in Dallas-Fort Worth, the nation's fifth largest radio market.


In Kansas City, Mo., WDAF-AM set trash cans outside its offices for listeners to toss their Dixie Chicks CDs. Its Web site displayed more than 800 listener e-mails, most of them in support of the station's boycott.


After more than 250 listeners called Friday to complain about Maines' comments, WTDR-FM in Talladega, Ala., dropped the Dixie Chicks.


"The emotion of the callers telling us about their fathers and sons and brothers who are overseas now and who fought in previous wars was very specific," said Jim Jacobs, president of Jacobs Broadcast Group, which includes WTDR.


The Dixie Chicks are in Europe promoting their recent release "Home," which won a Grammy last month for Best Country Album. The group is scheduled to kick off the U.S. leg of its "Top of the World Tour" on May 1 in Greenville, S.C.

It's funny that girl from Texas I knew in Paris is from Lubbeck. She used to work at the Bourse (French for stockmarket) and have to deal with angery Germans because her boss would never come into work. He always complained that his liver hurt.

I wonder if she is listening to the Dixie Chicks.

Personally, I don't give a flyin' fuck what Natalie what's her name thinks about anything, much less the possibility of war with Iraq. She certainly has the right to criticize whoever she wants. Same rights are there to anyone who chooses to boycott her music. More power to them all. Let them boycott each other. I hate most country music anyway. Maybe it'll all go away. Nah, I couldn't get so lucky.

To be cynically negative, I wonder who else we wish would make anti Bush comments so they to could be banned and we wouldn't have to listen to their shit songs on the radio anymore.
