Right Happy
"Americans want to be happy. The British just want to be right." Quentin Crisp.
I was reminded of this earlier today, because over on Andrew Sullivan (Although someone else is doing the blog seeing as he is away) they are starting to have a debate. The discussion centres on the fact that, on American TV shows, the only people who say bad things to the contestants are British. (English to be precise) Without looking at what they say, why do you think this is?
Answers on a postcard please.

Its also due to the socio-economic brackets. Dental care is regarded as a luxury in our system and the British I believe. For some reason our Governements believe that dental hygiene is purely aesthetic. Which is of course bullshit, but keeps them in surplus and cost of dental care extremely high. What results is a lot of poor people having horrid teeth. Some say it adds character, these people usually have no teeth.

Although it irritated me in class the night before last when my professor unveiled that "funniest joke in the world" thing where the scientists polled jokes in different countries. The only reason I didn't laugh was because I'd already read it in the newspaper years ago, it was old news to me. But it pissed me off when the class didn't laugh at the joke and instead someone said "Ah, English humour" which is exactly what they said about the second joke...and this is my daily dose of irritation when I'm just trying to further my career and make more money and I'm innocent EVEN IF I WANT TO GO HOME MIDWEEK AND DRINK AND PLAY THE NEW KATE BUSH FOR AT LEAST 48 HOURS STRAIGHT.
Because I am an ANGLOPHILE SADDO
WOW I'm listening to early Simple Minds right now - Sister Feelings Call/Sons & Fascination = mmmmmm hmmmm anyone know their song "The American"? What the fuck year was this man, 1982 or something? Man were they ever ready to tackle dancey new wave or what???? McC I know you know what I mean! They used to be so amazing, this band from Scotland though no one cares where they came from. I wouldn't have pulled it out either except that the last time I went down to Everyday Music on Broadway to buy old Fleetwood Mac vinyl, someone had the beautifully good sense to play old Simple Minds in the store, all over the first floor and even on the second floor I could hear it, faintly..."The American" etc. man they were one hell of a band back in the day. Definitely a special place in my heart for Simple Minds, forever.

Well I'm quite sorry my resources tell me it was 1981 not 1982, and more power to it -
"What do you know about this world anyway?/Here comes the sun the American sun/..."
No you just have to hear it to believe it.
