I doubt anyone will get through this. All you need to know is that by this fellas reckoning I'm from th efunniest place in England. I always knew this.

Tommy I like the way you always reduce things down to "this is the part you need to know". I remember you doing that on the phone. I think this is a truly great trait of yours.
No I couldn't get through it but I'm too drunk right now anyway. And I had something to say about anglophilia but I can't remember what it was now. Oh goddamnit.
Oh no! I remembered! I remember it now!
That was this:
I went around on the web recently looking for the date of Princess Di's wedding to Prince Charles. I went looking for this simply because I have been trying very hard to remember what was going on in my life at the time of this post-punk musical renaissance from 78-82. And I thought the wedding was 1980, but it was 1981 instead. So I was 10 years old. And I remember watching it on TV. It seemed like a big deal at the time. I realize there are anti-royals in the world, and that's fine, but I enjoyed watching it. I was just a kid. Princess Di was so beautiful, even if her whole look seems rather shabby in retrospect. I didn't really understand what it all meant at the time, why it was happening. It was just fun to watch.
Anyway, the gist of it is, I found this quote from some woman in England about the wedding where she'd said it "made her proud to British". Well I figured if some silly woman could actually feel proud to be British just because of that silly media spectacle of the wedding, then I could also say I was proud to be British because of the new Kate Bush album. See? Even though I'm not British, I figured if some silly woman could feel proud to be British just because of that royal wedding, then it couldn't possibly be more ludicrous if I were to say the same.
This was my reasoning. Kill me with a gun if you so choose.

I was a giant Simple minds fan. "The American" came out on 12 inch. The single version stops after the guitar solo. " OOH AMERI, AMERI, AMEI AMARIA MERACAN. It is a masterwork. I saw them on this tour. I couldn't get someone to go with me. Sister feelings call came out as a free bonus with sons and fascination for about the first couple of months. I still have some rare simple minds vinyl in a box in England. "I travel on 12 inch original pressing. Only 1900 ever made and the band had a letter posted in "Sounds " magazine saying they had no idea why. It later came out in a different sleeve. I also have Saints and sinners by Johnny and the self abusers on 7 inch on chiswick records. This is the holy grail of simple minds records. They were a punk band called Johhy and the ... befre they were the simple minds. If I didn't have such a sentimental attchment to this terrible song I would let you have it Marky. I still have a button badge of Chelsea girl. I used to were it on all that black clothing that smelled that I used to wear back in the day.........

The royal wedding.
We all got the day off work. I was 17. I remember it well. It was a nice day. I was up early and I ran 8 miles. I can even remember where I ran because I stayed at a friends house and I was worried that I would wake them up to hit the road at 6 in the morning. We all went to th e pub for an afternoon session. Not surprisingly for someone made of bones (in those days) drinking in the afternoon took a toll and I can distinctly recall falling off my seat outside the pub. We were drinking outside. There was a festive atmosphere. I recall enjoying the day even though I know I was no fan of the royals by that time. A bigger memory is 1977 and the Silver Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth. She did a tour of just about everywhere. She must have, 'cos she drove past our house. She waved. We waved back. Her motorcade went from StHelens to liverpool (13 miles) the crowds were deep the whole way. The only other time I saw this behaviour was when the pope came to town. The monachy and the pope - bigger than elvis and the beatles.
Oh you needn't convert me to Johnny & the Self Abusers, I just got to hear their stuff this summer, made a whole CD for myself of their demos. GREAT stuff and so much more punk rock than people are aware of. Also one of these tracks was the fabled "Cocteau Twins" - the song the band was named after - I've read about that for years but never thought I'd get to hear it. Simple Minds' first album has still not quite managed to snag me compared to those early Johnny & The Self Abusers demos. I still have never seen the sleeve though so I'd probably die if I saw your copy, Tommy.
"I Travel" - I dunno - I used to have this really boring plain sleeved 12" of Changeling or something like that. It looked so boring you might have assumed it was classical music by looking at it. I don't think I ever had the "I Travel" 12" in any form. The latter half of "Empires and Dance" is amazing though - just discovered that this summer as well.

Did you ever see them live back "in the day" Tommy?
Oh fuck me, you said you saw them on the tour with The American. Sorry I'm a bit slow. I think my needle is fucking up too much dust on it.
Oh my god it was! Too much dust on my stylus! You can ruin records that way, I remember one Morrissey record I had...when it starts to sound like dust has gathered on the needle you need to STOP and get that shit off there right away.
Damnit I need this live Peter Gabriel on CD *ASAP*. I'm too drunk to go to school tomorrow.

This would have meant you were 16 then?
You know what...reading your description again of the queen...I think I saw her drive by once at the airport near my house. Don't laugh, I really do have a strange and distinct memory of this. I was very young. Maybe it was Washington D.C. instead but that doesn't seem likely.
