The happy people are those who are producing something; the bored people are those who are consuming much and producing nothing.

what he's saying is that
1/Van Gogh was a 'happy' person
2/Paris Hilton is 'bored' with her life

???

Sometimes quotes sound prophetic..and I would love that quote to be true-yet I don't think that life can be summed up like that.

That is very true. But I bet V.G. was happiest painting and Paris is happiest being in home porn.

Actually I think some artists are just miserable people regardless.

Take out the words 'happy' and 'bored' in the quote and I might more agree...something like-

"The interesting people are those who are producing something, the dull people are those who are consuming much and producing nothing.

He was like Elvis they only ever filmed him from the waist up.

Last week on hols we went to the one big store in town (Wal-Mart) and got the whole range of shite celeb mags. People, Us, Cosmo and about three others I can't remember. Paris Hilton was in all of them. I was thrilled that I couldn't name over half the faces and of the faces I could name, I wasn't sure what they did. ie I know Jennifer Garner is an actress but I've no idea what in. I'm telling ya, if you can get Tivo on your telly then all the comercials go away. I pop my shows on, watch 'em and turn the thing off. I sure hope all those folks in that 18-35 demographic can get to do the same.

to get back on message. I wouldn't be surprised if Paris Hiton is bored with her life. Mark my words, before this decade is out you will have encountered a series of articles about why she doesn't live the kind of life she is living now, because she grew unhappy with it. Never will you read an article by someone who is bored of creating something they are proud of. That's NEVER.

you people are on to exactly what is currently moving me

here are two books in this vein that have changed my life.

Happiness: Lessons From a New Science, by Richard Layard. this guy is an advisor to tony blair (which could be good or bad but in this case is great). he looks at the great recent advances in brain research and finds that people are happy when they are productive, secure within their social circle, and free of too much fear.

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. if you ever wondered why it makes you so happy to be creative.

"You have heard about how a musician loses herself in her music, how a painter becomes one with the process of painting. In work, sport, conversation or hobby, you have experienced, yourself, the suspension of time, the freedom of complete absorption in activity. This is "flow," an experience that is at once demanding and rewarding--an experience that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi demonstrates is one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences a person can have. "

pronounce him chicks-sent-me-high and seek flow in everyday life, is what i say...

Is this the fella who got the brain scans of the buddhist monks and saw that the brain activity in the areas we associate with happiness were more pronounced? I read that a short while ago and it blew me away. The monks had trained their brains to be happy.

exactly tommy.

your brain not only reacts to but also adapts to stimuli.

watching TV a lot makes you depressive because TV is full of negative crap which you take in passively. doing positive things, for instance creative or socially-useful stuff, increases to ability of the brain to produce pleasure hormones. your general level of happiness improves, not just when you are doing something good but also on a day-to-day level.

The meaning of life is creative love. Not love as an inner feeling, as a private sentimental emotion, but love as a dynamic power moving out into the world and doing something original.
