This internet radio station has officially blown my mind

Post by marky »

www.radiohidebound.com

I have listened to it for the last two hours or so and it started out with a song I had forgotten by one of my favourite bands from the old days and since then I have heard some things that were boring or uninteresting but mostly I am very impressed. And you can request things too! I only requested one thing but it turned out not to be very good. Then they wouldn't play my second request for a long time but I didn't care cause they played things like Depeche Mode's Blasphemous Rumours (my lont time, all time fave song of theirs, btw) and Echo & the Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" made me just a bit weepy for that was one of the songs I heard on the radio in Dec. '84 that just blew my mind. I heard that and the Smiths for the first time then. Same tape I made off the radio. Never heard anything so wonderful in my young musical life than the things I heard on that tape back then. My whole world expanded. I went to the record store that Christmas and bought about I dunno...30 or 40 records all at once. It would be very hard to name them all now...but I can remember just a few. Do you want me to name them? No, probably not, but before I forget this inspiration, I want to get them out of my brain into words:

1) Bongos - whatever that EP was..."Hudson" something...they were from the U.S. I can't remember what city now

2) Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (this was the doozy of them all)

3) what else did I get in that pile? I can't remember! agh

4) China Crisis - that album with the big picture of nuclear power plant on it "Working With Fire & Steel" - a song from which was actually played on the above mentioned radio station when I first turned it on tonight!

5) Passion Puppets - Beyond the Pale (I think that's the album name - there's only one album by them so...) I've been thinking about this one again lately too. There is a CD of it now available only recently. I think the CD version only came out in 2006, in fact. And it's got bonus tracks. But in truth other than two very memorable songs, they didn't make a big impression at the time. Doesn't mean they necessarily wouldn't sound better now. I have had that happen with certain records.

anyway I can't remember anything else that I could say for sure was in that pile of about 30 records. I want to say Simple Minds' Sparkle In The Rain, though.

Fuck the hell out of my goddamn ass, they are playing the Smiths on this radio station now. Oh fuck this man I refuse to go to sleep. I'm going to stay up and listen to this station til the cows come home. I've heard enough to know I'm in love.
If they play the The The 12" I'm thinking of, it'll all be over. And I found out this station comes from a city only 2 hours away from my hometown. I feel so young again. Shit. Where's my wine?

Fuck, I heard Echo & The Bunnymen's "The Killing Moon" only a few songs away from China Crisis' "Here Come A Raincloud"!
And now the Smiths "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"

and I'm just going to cry in a minute. I mean it.

And this station is so near my hometown! My own hometown! I remember what good radio was like in this guy's town - I even remember the old record stores in this guy's town - I mean holy crap...Sarah will find me out. I don't care. It's Washington D.C. I'm talking about here. And I'm going to cry some more now. They really had such a good appreciation for UK bands, the whole D.C. scene did. Nowhere in the U.S. seemed to appreciate UK bands like that area of the country except for out in L.A.

I hope you're happy Sloth, they're playing Talking Heads - a song from 1977 called "No Compassion" and it's fantastic.

I never want to go to sleep now. I will be awake until at least 10 am. This radio station is exactly what makes me feel like a teenager all over again.

Not so much because it plays some good music, but because it is RADIO don't you see? GOOD OLD FASHIONED RADIO! A DYING ART!

THE FCC WANT TO RULE AGAIN ON THE MEDIA RULES WE WILL STOP THEM TOOTH AND NAIL AGAIN WE WILL STOP THEM FROM HANDING ALL MEDIA IN THIS COUNTRY TO A TINY HANDFUL OF GIANT CORPORATIONS. SAVE RADIO! SAVE LOCAL NEWS! SAVE DIVERSITY! SAVE DEMOCRACY! SAVE THE TRUTH! What left of it there is...

Holy crap! Now they're playing the Shoes! The SHOES! WOW wOW wOWW THE shoes! That makes me so happy that someone in my whole life ever bothered to play the Shoes for me. I'm just a little kid now. Yeah the Shoes were really one of the better U.S. bands ever, no doubt.

I even saw the film that song was based on called Nightporter. It was European and had Nazis in it and yech, it was rather unsettling.

Haha! And guess what Sloth? Talking Heads pops up again for me because I just got this DVD in the mail and it has a bunch of bands performing on an old Brit TV show called "The Old Grey Whistle Test" and the first song is Talking Heads doing "Psycho Killer" circa...I can't remember if they said it was 1977 or 1978 and my DVD player is a bitch so I can't go back and find out right now but yeah after having to play the first part of the DVD several times I kinda got to like that song more than usual. Tina Weymouth has this short kindof Beatlesy haircut that is kindof captivating. She looks like she ought to be in the movie 2001 or something.

I gotta tell you though, and I do feel the need to share this - the Bruce Springsteen song on this thing LASTED FOREVER MAN that fucking thing lasted forever! The song he performs is called "Rosalita" - it was from the 70's or whatever. I mean even though I don't like Springsteen that much I have honestly never been so repulsed by his music. I swear that fucking song must have been at least 8 minutes long. And then his saxophonist or whatever goes into a solo and then he goes into a solo or whatever and after all that he comes BACK to the mic again and I was just like STOP!!! It just seemed like he was singing the same note over and over and over. See the problem is because of my DVD player problems I can't fast forward without problems, so I have to just let it play or I can't get to the good bands. Argh. And they had this Meatloaf track that went on for eons, too. YUCK. Although even he was better than Springsteen.

Okay I got a new DVD player I got so fucking sick of it. I've been meaning to do that and I was determined to watch this goddamn DVD today. So now I can fast forward through the crap. Now I'm watching GARY NUMAN & HIS BAND TUBEWAY ARMY FROM 1979!!!!!!! "Are Friends Electric?" is the song! They sound so good! And wow, he looks quite attractive! I don't normally think of him like that but he looks good.

If you could see what the ancient synthesizer the guy in the band is playing you would absolutely die. I mean that is ANCIENT.
