I can't stop myself

I can't stop myself from buying music. See, what did I do? I decided to stop buying CD's for awhile, thinking this was sure to solve my money problems. So what do I end up doing? Spending a bunch of money on music videos and vinyl records. I really can't stop myself.

And there's this obscure thing from Manchester's punk/post-punk era that I just have to try because you can't fucking get it anywhere online at all!!! And I know someone else on the Factory mailing list who wants to hear it too!!! So are you telling me I shouldn't pay a mere $20 to get one of this guy's LP's??? It's not exactly easy to find anyway. And you can't fucking get it on CD anymore unless you want to try a few dodgy out of the way websites who might rip you off. God I love the thrill of the chase! (Watch it suck, now, for all my efforts) And no I won't tell you lot what the name of it is because if it turns out I want his other LP I don't want someone to get to it before me! There's only one decently priced copy available!

And then I had to go and buy some ancient 12" I used to have in 1991 (actually I hope the one I'm buying is the one I used to have, we will see) that is totally techno dance kind of stuff and it was because of the tracks Trixie (I mean PIXIE damnit I always want to say Trixie) sent me that I realized I wanted to have that again. But now I am kindof wondering if it really is the same because it seems to me I bought it in 1990 and this record's supposed release date was 1/91. But oh well, it's from the UK, it's techno. Hell, maybe it will be good anyway.

And then I also had to go and blow a great big wad of dough on Ultravox videos. Because I am on an Ultravox trip. ESPECIALLY the Vienna album. The first song on that is this short instrumental and it is soo gorgeous. There is a bonus track at the very end that I think New Order ought to be jealous of called "Alles Klar". I met someone online who said she played that song like 10 times in a row or something. I don't blame her.

But I still think my favourite albums are "Vienna" & "Lament" from 1980 and 1984 respectively.

Here is a homemade video someone made for that very first short instrumental track on Vienna. I mean just listen to this short track and forget everything you thought you knew about "synth pop" man. I am telling you, New Order had a bit of competition back in the day:

OH MY GOD!! Look at it! HERE IT IS!!! THIS IS THE PIECE OF MY CHILDHOOD I WISH I HAD ON VINYL AGAIN!!! I could just see it in my mind last weekend!!! I had this sometime circa December 1984! My attraction to Ultravox is that I haven't heard most of the 'hits' on it in 20 years:

It reminds me of when I was all snowed in as a teenager!!! Snowed in! December 1984! Suddenly I realized Echo & the Bunnymen existed! Heard the Smiths for the first time, etc. etc.etc. I'm telling you December 1984 was where it all began as far as I'm concerned. And I hadn't heard Joy Division or New Order yet, either.

Oh god I don't think I can rest until I have that Ultravox vinyl in my hands again. I want to feel the sleeve in my fingers. I want to see the way the light reflects back on the shiny surface of the photo in the middle of the album cover.

And also this crazy thing happened about a week and a half ago when I was able to remember that the reason I bought that double LP pictured above was because they were actually playing it IN THE RECORD STORE one day. Just the fact that I was able to actually pull that out of the deep recesses of my memory was...I was just in awe.

Because to be honest I left them for dead ever since. I saw a few of their videos after that I guess, but I never bought any of their proper albums, nothing. I didn't even hear them on college radio. Nothing. Nada. Until now.

on the techno from the UK a good amount of it was very DIY and didn't come out on major labels int he late 80s to mid 90s so it's likely that the dates will be shakey: white label stuff is usuallypretty shakey but that's a general rule for happy hardcore and I don't know what you're looking into but it's something to keep in mind.

I have a DJ Sammy cd from the mid 90s somewhere around here that I have replaced twice (both very pricey since it's difficult to find) so I know what you mean.

I even buy music that I don't really like all that much.

and I have to stop going to the margurita bar. Ugh. I'm very possibly going to die.

Yeah I know you are right about the vagueness of white labels and stuff. The record I had wasn't a white label, it was black with a plain black outer sleeve the way most white labels have a plain white sleeve you know what I mean? Anyway...you are right about the vagueness, I should have hope.

I bought that record along with one other record in a Dance/DJ type record shop in Manchester in 1990. No lie. I was just doing a tour of the record shops and I walked into this one and could not fucking believe my ears. I'd never heard any techno before. I didn't know Orbital then, or Aphex Twin, or any of that German stuff, etc. That was the first time I began to understand that there was some heavy dance music going on. Also, if I recall correctly, this was a record shop that the guy from 808 State worked in.

Anyway enough of my nostalgia...let's talk about your waffle maker! Hahaha.

BTW, is there any kind of music called "hippy hardcore"? Just curious.

Also when you say you sometimes buy music you don't like, do you mean you buy it KNOWING you don't like it that much, or do you buy it and THEN find out you don't like it that much? Inquiring minds want to know!

I would think hippy hardcore would be like goa or psytrance or something thouh less like the cheesey happyhardcore designed to intensify E rushes/trigger seretonian buildup and release.

and I buy music by bands I respect but don't actually like or tend to pick up new albums by bands that have one good album or something only to discover I really don't like the new one. Oh well - it's a compulsion. My little brother unloads a lot of those from me though.

Okay, here's something I just remembered about that double LP pictured above: on the inside sleeve, right, each song was followed by an explanation of how high it got on the UK charts. I just remembered that.
