My Martin Hannett collection appears to be complete

Post by marky »

I got the last record I needed. The one I didn't think I'd ever find. It's a 7" by Tim Green on Hannett's label, Rabid Records. I found it on ebay, but not by accident, I just put it on my ebay wish list and waited months and months until one day ebay emailed me saying they finally had it up for sale. Luckily I didn't have to pay a lot for it either. Only one other person had bid and I paid about $8 for it including postage. That's cheap for a post punk 7" of this time period (1979). But the sad thing is it turned out not to be produced by Hannett at all (there was no way to know if it was or not - even the Hannett website didn't know). And...it's also sappy adult contemporary 70's radio kindof crap. How it ended up on a fucking independent punk label I can't understand. But hey, at least the search is over.

The only thing of Hannett I don't have that I want (I can't claim to have everything...there are some things he did that just don't interest me) is live recordings of him on stage playing bass with John Cooper Clarke & Pauline Murray (formerly of Penetration). I think it was just one tour Hannett & Steve Hopkins (piano sidekick of Hannett's) did with both JCC & Pauline Murray circa October 1980. But I haven't found anyone who has these recordings, assuming they even exist.

So it's nice to kindof feel I'm at the end of the road finally.

Wow! It seems one drunken post from me last weekend touched off a whole discussion of Martin Hannett on the Factory mailing list group on Yahoo! I'm thrilled.

Though the rumour is now that New Order are breaking up (again). I just can't be arsed to care, really. They're so fuckin' lazy anyway, and in hindsight their last album really pales in comparison to Get Ready.

Oh my god now they're saying there's a Martin Hannett scene in 24 Hour Party People that was only shown in the theaters and you can't find this scene on either the Brit or US DVD!! :( :( :( TRAGIC I say, TRAGIC!

Wow, I gotta tell you, the people on this Factory mailing list...I am just gobsmacked at what these people are saying now. These people are way over my head, I'm humbled. I mean I thought I was a fan and all that, but...jeez. I concede defeat.
The only thing that kindof comforts me is the general consensus that New Order are on the downward slide. They do all sorts of JD songs live now...just drifting...someone said "they need to do less commercial songs" and that's bloody right. Even when my good friend in Scotland started giving them good verbal kickings, I still held out, but I too am disillusioned, now. It's sad. Because they're capable of more and the truth is they just can't be arsed.
