Nick Drake

Post by marky »

I've been privy to some rare Nick Drake items of late which have affected me deeply and I shant comment about.

He was a genius.

Also I think one of John Peel's favourite songs is Nick Drake's "Northern Sky" and that is the song that caused me to fall in love with Nick Drake's music in the first place.

I think as far as dead rock stars go, he even beats Jeff Buckley which is really saying something in my book.

No doubt someone will soon fry my arse for calling Nick Drake a rock star. But it's all part of the fun.

Rest assured, as soon as I can get together the money to build an ass fryer big enough for such a comment, you'll be covered in all those secret herbs and spices that the colonel made famous.

HAhaha Tommy.

It's just not funny how I love him. How I love Nick Drake. It's just not funny. I remember a whole summer of red wine in my parents' house in the deep dark hours of the morning (I'm talking 3 AM and beyond) when Nick Drake played in my room at full volume with no one in my suburban lane to stop me who could care. And I was at a real turning point in my life then, too. Nick kept me in balance. Candles in the dark. When I looked at a particular photo of him in the big box set LP booklet, this one particular photo of him looked so much like my best friend who had just died. The facial features, chin, nose...looked so much like my friend who had just died that I couldn't bear to look at that picture for years and years. I covered it up with a piece of yellow ruled notebook paper I clipped to the page, I couldn't bear seeing that picture it looked so much like my friend who had died only the year before. It scared me. This was 1995-96.

Nick knew, in the deepest recesses of his soul that he would become popular. He knew. But his soul despaired, knowing this would only happen many years after his death.

God bless him. Even if there is no God. God bless Nick Drake, for he knew.

I'm sorry that I can't find a picture online right now that is the one from the box set that reminded me so much of my dead friend's facial features. But in the meantime...

I'm still trying to find that photo that so reminded me of my dead friend. Give me time.

Damnit I can't find that photo online at all. I'll likely have to scan it myself. Anyway, in the meantime...

I can't help it if I'm drunk. What's that instrumental tune Nick did at the first of an album? Wait...I promise I will get back to you.

It's the first song on Bryter Later.

Only a God could be better than Nick Drake.

Though I'm a proud atheist.

I am watching the documentary about him and crying. There is a moment when they play a demo of one of his songs and I think its Hazy Jane I and they show his room in his parents house with the round window and yeah I just started crying. Nick was closer to my heart than well...anyone really. God rest his soul. No god, etc. Somehow this talented young man existed but there is no god, etc.

Really though, deeper to my heart than any musician really. Deeper to my heart.
