Bulletin Board of Bad Behavior

At the end of the year Peel would do a chart of the 50 most popular songs as voted upon by his listeners. As I stated on the Billy Bragg/Tom Robinson thread, I have come into posession of this show from 1983 through my friend.

So I am going to continue to talk about it and there's nothing you can do to stop me, but you can quit reading at any time, of course.

#43 is Birthday Party again with "Deep In The Woods". You see most of the time Birthday Party are not something I can get into, only very select songs. They can be very noisy and cacophonic. But the two songs represented here as voted on by Peel listeners are fucking great!

Okay now on to #42, it's Danse Society, can't remember the name of it just now...but now they did some real crap in their career, and they did some boring stuff too but this one is great. And they did some great stuff, I admit. Especially their early stuff, but this I would consider their later stuff by 1983. Yeah a great Danse Society song from 1983 who would have guessed it? Only on a Peel gathered chart I suppose. Wow! CHECK OUT THE SYNTH SOLO AT THE END!!!!!!! What is the song called, I can't remember but I'm sure Peel will tell us at the end.

U2's "New Year's Day"

Which may sound totally boring I mean we've all heard that song WAY too many times, but it really helps me to date the chart in my mind, you see...because while I knew about U2's New Year's Day a little earlier than most folks in the US did in 1983, I sure as hell didn't have the chance to hear all these other bands in the chart yet. So it helps me to date it in my mind. Gives it context for me than I can hold on to.

I got off work early today cause I had a training. It's Pabst tonight. I think I've got one more left. Oh god, it's horrible, one last beer.

You guys think I'm crazy but I listened to all these songs last night, I did do this before last night, but because I was so drunk I forgot what songs I heard. And I went completely crazy then and I'm going completely crazy now. Mark E. Smith sneers in this song, he says "CHEAPO AIRLINE SNOBS" Which I almost typed "Snogs" hahahah Freudian British slip.

Now he's talking about soldiers from the civil war. "the Lucky Hit made me hit a TIME BLOCK" "But when I got back/the place I made the purchase no longer exists..." Yeah I remember that this song was about using a time machine to go back into time, something like that.

If The Fall aren't in the top 5 British bands ever to exist, well I'm Geraldo.

Next up at #40 he plays SPK and I remember screaming last night that I hadn't heard SPK in almost 20 years and I couldn't believe it. And it's totally different from the SPK I had an album of back in about 1987 (which was extremely ambient), no this song is very dance oriented, mid 80's DANCE 12" music! Yeah!!!! SPIN ME ROUND LIKE A RECORD BABY ETC Anyway I don't know what song this SPK is...we will have to wait...

Doesn't anyone here know the joy of mid 80's Dance 12"es? Ah well, maybe not.

And all this happened only two years before I discovered this kind of music, that's what killed me, this was 2 years before I knew anything like this existed in the whole world. After you've heard the Cocteaus, you're not a musical virgin anymore.

When the song comes to an end, John Peel says that when people ask who his favourite band is nowadays, he says the Cocteau Twins, can you believe it? I can.

Unfortunately the next song in the chart is worse than all that came before it. Oh well, had to have a dud somewhere.

I just realized a minute ago that I am blessed with having two last beers, not one.

I'm upset I ran out of Pumplin Ale, though. That sucks.

I only know one guy who knows who the Luddites are, and he particularly likes them. I could probably get more of them from him, but I'd have to pay money. He's a bit of a bastard that way. God knows it's near impossible to buy their records/music in any format.

Next up is the Fall's Kicker Consipracy, which is okay and brilliant enough but I've heard it too many times, am bored by it.

What I mean is it's only been 350 years since I heard X Mal Deutschland, or at least since I heard EARLY X Mal Deutschland. Now I KNOW I'm in high school, only this would have been when I was in middle school, the mind boggles. Why didn't someone come to me and force me to hear Joy Division in 1980? Why did it have to take until 1985? Etc.

Okay, I know I'm back in high school for sure, now. This has been established that I am back in high school. Which is weird cause several times today at this training I went to, I got flashes of being back in high school.

I've always despised the way this one was produced, though. Just being honest.

Maybe I'll play some of my Eddie Izzard video tonight called "Circle". I never seem to get to the end of it, though I've tried three times to do so. I do enjoy it quite a bit. I think it just wears me out with laughter after awhile and then my stomach muscles need a break.

Drinking Cinammon Apple flavoured iced tea right now. It's good.

And next up at #26, which John Peel says "and I'm quite pleased at this" and low and behold we know that Kate Bush loves us dearly because it's 10,000 Maniacs, the EARLY VERSION OF "MY MOTHER THE WAR" OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD EARLY 10,000 MANIACS KILLS ME OH GOD unbelievable.

God I don't know if that isn't the best thing I've heard since the bloody chart started. Whew! **wipes brow** what next? Should I open another beer? It's 7 pm. God god god I love early Natalie Merchant. Don't even get me started, she was very intelligent and poetic and historic with her lyrics. I learned so many esoteric words from her. Vignettes of painters and of history...she always took you way back in time.

Oh god I think New Order is coming..oh JESUS CHRIST "LEAVE ME ALONE"!!!! NOW that is a mother fucker~! Oh yeah that is a mother fucking classic song if there was ever one. And it makes me sad to think that "Age of Consent" will probably place higher in this chart than this song. New Order's "Leave Me Alone" folks, you only live once, a song to make one's life complete.

#24 is...wait...what is this? I don't know yet. Vocals start. Oh okay it's Elvis Costello again. Hmm. Kindof spooky this one. We'll see.

Where's that beer? You know I could have sworn he said that the Elvis Costello oh yeah...actually I did like this Costello song, too. I've heard this before. I think he said these Costello songs were from the "Punch The Clock" album which if that's true I'm going to die because I think that's the same one that has "Everyday I Write The Book" and if it is, I'll likely have an orgasm and a terrible urge to purchase it.

Now it's something by the Assembly. I'm not hopeful. Let's see...Assembly was Vince Clarke from Yazoo with Feargal Sharkey singing wasn't it? Or was it someone else from Depeche Mode rather than Vince Clarke? I know it's Feargal singing anyway. I'm rather disgusted with this one I'm afraid. That's some mighty rinky dink silly keyboard sounds.
