I have a Happy Mondays question

Now, when I bought the Hallelujah EP from Happy Mondays, I bought the one with a orangey cover that has "Hallelujah (The MacColl Mix)" etc. Its Factory catalogue number is FACD 260. But it has recently come to my attention that there was an earlier EP with extremely similar tracks, and it had a black sleeve with the word "Madchester" across it, and it had a Factory catalogue number of FAC 242. Well, the end result is, I feel like I don't really have the "original" version of Hallelujah at all now since I don't have the Madchester EP. This really bothers me and I don't know that I've even heard it before since the only Hallelujah EP I've ever known is the one I have.

So my question is this: is the "Hallelujah" song on the Madchester EP markedly different than the later mixes done by Lillywhite & Oakenfold (entitled the MacColl mix and the Club mix)? Or is it pretty much the same ball of wax?

McC, if you're out there, your package will go out Monday. 2 LP's, 2 CD's. If I can't squeeze them all in the same package then I'll send them in two separate packages.

Well I know that Sloth, but the end result is I have to get this damn 12". Which is fine, I actually do have the money. So I should just shut up and do it.

Because the Madchester 12" is more HANNETT, you see? Not just a different album cover but just slightly more HANNETT involved, eh? Yeah.

I want to hear the Hallelujah version that is just Hannett and the Mondays, unfucked with by Paul Oakenfold or Steve Lillywhite. I want to hear the UNFUCKED version. Right?

Incidentally I recently met this guy here in town that was looking for a really obscure Black Grape video. It's called "The Grape Tapes" Do you guys know how he could get that?

Anyway next I'm going back to one of my earlier threads about record shopping cause I wanted to talk more about this band called the Tapes from Holland who opened up for Joy Division a few times on their European tour.

Also another new development is I've managed to find the ONE gig Joy Division did where Hannett was at the soundboard. Can you fucking believe it? I hope it has good sound quality. I can't imagine what noises he must have added. This was University of London Union on 8th Februrary 1980. Another thing is I found this guy who might actually have some fucking live stuff of Hannett on stage playing guitar with John Cooper Clarke!!!!!!!!

Hey do you guys have Happy Mondays' Peel Sessions? That's another thing I realized recently that I don't have yet. I'd like to get that, it has a lot of their early songs on it.

What kind of music did Martin Hannett hear in his mind at night in the silence when he was at work in the studio alone? What was it he heard that no one else did?

Well I finally heard the original version of "Hallelujah" and I gotta say I really liked it a lot. I think it's better than the MacColl mix, even if I love Kirsty MacColl. In a way it kindof reminds me of the first time I heard Orbital's original version of Chime, the slower one. Hearing this slower, more experimental version of what had become a sped up remixed dance classic is really interesting.

Fuck I really like this original version of Hallelujah, this is top stuff. Hannett's touch is all over it, and it just drifts...almost more a dub thing than the gussied-up remixed dance tracks.

Okay I got the Peel Sessions too, gonna listen to that next.

Jesus people, the Peel Session versions of "Freaky Dancin'" and "Cob 20" are like aural heroin. The only thing besides that I can remember thinking was aural heroin was some live Dif Juz CD's I have.

Yeah, I have considered this very carefully and have decided without a doubt that the Happy Mondays version of Hallelujah on the Madchester 12" is absolutely one of the top 10 things Martin Hannett ever did. I'm going to get that on vinyl along with a few other things, very soon. I wrote the 12"es I wanted down on paper so I wouldn't forget to spend too much money on them! Hahaha.

It's been said before but I pity the soul of anyone who hasn't heard the Peel Session versions of "Freaky Dancin'" and "Cob 20". And I don't think Hannett was involved on those. I don't think Hannett would have been allowed in the studio for Peel Sessions at all, but I could be wrong. That's the way I've always understood it in the past. No Hannett on Peel Sessions. BBC goes its own way for those.

I had a dream last night (well, tonight. I went to bed at about 7 PM with a terrible headache...god, there's nothing better for a hangover headache than a hot bath and ASPIRIN - Mary of Jesus drug you know? Aspirin!)

Anyway yeah, I had this dream that I was frequenting this record store, and this store was unlike any I have ever been in. It was very clean and suburban, but the interesting thing is they never played ANY music in it. Yeah, total silence in the entire store. They were probably located in a strip mall next to a video shop or something. I loved that store. I want to go back. The owner was so goofy and weird. It was carpeted too. The same kind of compressed carpet of my elementary school floors. Not shaggy at all, very compressed.

Total silence the whole time you were in there. Silence! I love it!
