THE SOFT BOYS

Post by marky »

Okay the other board is still down so you're just going to have to put up with me.

The Soft Boys were a sortof psychedelic rock and roll band that Robyn Hitchcock was in before he went solo. It's not right to call them punk, even if they were around at that time.

Now most Soft Boys never really appealed to me aside from one album called "Invisible Hits" and a few of their other songs. So I was looking through my CD's for ones to sell because I needed money. And I came across "Underwater Moonlight". Now, I know this has some really classic songs on it, but here I was about to sell it because I just never play it and I've had it for years and years. But you see, I couldn't bring myself to sell it at all. So I kept it and decided I would play it for the first time in oh god, 15 years? And WOW. I think actually my appreciation now for punk rock helps me appreciate this more than I did at the time, even though, like I said, it really isn't punk.

They were influenced by the Beatles, see - check out "Queen of Eyes" for an example of that, they were influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the 60's, but very rudimentary rock and roll, kindof like a 60's garage punk band, yeah, that's what they were like.

And they were also influenced of course by the recently deceased Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Early Pink Floyd. Which I tried to get into once and couldn't. Unfortunately I've never been able to get into Pink Floyd from any era, though I understand the appeal of Syd Barrett.

Okay it's Sunday evening, I'm sobering up now. There's still time for another smoke, though.

I had a dream about a week ago that someone offered me pills that I guess were supposed to be ecstasy, but really they looked like these tiny aspirin tablets I have. Doesn't aspirin go by a different name in Britain or am I wrong? I'll have to look that up. In any case, I was delighted recently to finally figure out that what's known over there as "paracetemol" is simply the same drug we call acetominophen or "Tylenol" in the U.S. This was something that had bothered me for years and years, all these references to "paracetemol" in lyrics - what the fuck were they talking about? Well, now I know.
