Sara/Sarah,

we should talk. I want the pregnancy latest, regardless of how boring others might think that might be. Call me on 513-871-2205. We are in the same time zone. Also, we can talk about Marky behind his back. Fucking lunatic if you ask me.

Marky--I'm happy for Beckham though - I think they said he was the only English player to score a goal in two world cups?? Jesus! As for the Rooney guy I think he has a lot to learn.

Marky the World Cup sex pert expert. Your words Marky might be more true than any purist would ever admit.

holy sun stroke

Post by martino »

i was just out for a jog and passed by the arena, which is the place with the giant screen and free seating for 30,000. there was turmoil: the gates had just opened and people were rushing in at top speed, trying to get the best views.

but this was five hours before the game starts! imagine sitting in the hot sun for five hours just to get a good view of a tv screen. you gotta hand it to these people, they sure are determined to soak in the collective experience.

i'm sick too, nyc is fucking me up, 100 degrees on the platform, 60 in the car, 90 on the street, 65 in the office...my head is going to explode, oh this is a world cup forum.

Seems like Americans that don't care for soccer are extra proud of that. This is a country that will get into any sport, bowling, spelling bees, fear factor. americans just hate to be inferior in anything.

I'm constantly besieged with this issue. What's with soccer in america?

Americans don't watch it because...
it's low scoring.....like hockey
there's not much contact....like basketball
only white people participate....like nascar (apologies to Sloth but lots of folk call it a sport -especially sponsors)

I do get tired of pointing out that, more often than not (and always if your children are that 50 plus% of the population with a vagina) american kids love soccer more than any other sport. As an adult (I'm normally having this conversation with adults) you probaly listen to american media telling you that soccer isn't for you. From that jumping off point, it's not that surprising that baseball/football/basketball journalists aren't bigging up the biggest game on the planet. It is certainly in their interest not to do so. I feel it's like one of those, "through the looking glass," moments. The majority of american kids play soccer because they enjoy it. Tiny minorities pursue basketball and football because it lends itself to freakish body types/or it has the potential to kill you. Baseball can be boring and you also need to be big these days. And yet,we are constantly reminded that americans don't like the thing they gravitate toward given freedom of choice. This situation can't last forever. I look at it this way. You can get baseball/football/basketball at Walmart. You can only get soccer at small stores. American sports are a triumph of marketing. At some point the product will trump. American sports are cold war sports. This a global economy. Victory will be ours. In your face Coors Lite.

"This a global economy"

(ummm. . . if you're from the americas, it is a nafta / cafta economy, and guess where the nasty "n" sport's been hanging out?

have you taken the little ones to the movies recently? what's the biggest kids movie out today? "Cars" take a guess at what that's about. I don't think the media is going to replace it with soccer anytime soon. . . unfortunately

can you imagine a more environmentally destructive "sport"? perhaps one day the blue angels will race some other country and then we will really start cranking out the pollution with our sports.

let's pray that the folks on link television are really making a difference and that soccer does catch on in the mainstream, and let's perhaps depending on how close to say, martinsville we live, hold our breath and our ears . . . it might be needed due to air and noise pollution.

let me break it down another way too, the DEM governor of our state backs nascar! here. and he's in the top eight for presidential candidates, Mark Warner, take a look at him he looks like a kooky Kennedy. He's a well loved governor and an economic / environmental dunce . . . because we globalized and all of our textile and furniture and other great paying, great benefits companies went elsewhere . . .so then he was like oh, yes, let the people of your region be the servants of the rich folks who come down here to eat fried chicken and sleep at your hotels. let's urban sprawl this shit all over the place to provide, fast food, crappy lodging, and most importantly minimum wage jobs to the people of certain parts of virginia. we love nascar! soccer sucks! )

tommy i love it that you are not a nascar fan, really i do, but it's busch, not coors: Budweiser and Busch

and it's more like in your face Domino's Pizza, Nextel, and Home Depot.

just to name a few . . . in Canada, for Brett where ever he's been, it'd be like in your face TSN, a division of Bell Globemedia – one of Canada's leading media companies

and in Mexico it is in your face CIE, the largest entertainment company in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world which has relationships with eight million consumers each year, and NASCAR as a partner

i really don't think anything is in their faces, but i do think it is all up in ours.

World Media..??

Post by Alta Vista [Bot] »

Okay, let's at least (first) admit that sports in general was globalized by the U.S. (commercialized...you do understand what I mean by that..I hope.)
Secondly, of all "sports," soccer was the biggest before football, icehockey, baseball..etc..

To quote another Paxacidian:

"Americans don't watch it because...
it's low scoring.....like hockey
there's not much contact....like basketball
only white people participate....like nascar (apologies to Sloth but lots of folk call it a sport -especially sponsors) "

"Nascar might have been a stretch when you think of the viewers that follow that left turn signal......"contest." Not sure what else to call it..sorry. But, in a single sitting, Nascar does draw more people than a single game of anything...no joke. (I hate ASSCAR).....I like to take right turns.

One more "somewhat" truism: PAX quote

"more often than not (and always if your children are that 50 plus% of the population with a vagina) american kids love soccer more than any other sport. As an adult (I'm normally having this conversation with adults) you probaly listen to american media telling you that soccer isn't for you. American sports are cold war sports. This a global economy. Victory will be ours."...

........This statement not endorsed by the FDA, but by more people in the world than that who believe otherwise.

Let's all remember the most important thing about..well..most everything- PEOPLE are fickle, propoganda sells, and the truth is told by those who hear it, not those who live it......

Then again, who am I? A nobody with to many thoughts and no coin. Maybe my rant was alcohol induced, but to tell you the truth...whatever I wrote this evening sure felt good writing....whatever the outcome or opinion of anyone else on this board. Thanx for reading if you did..Write you soon enough PAX.

i don't know if that's true, but it sounds true.

about nascar, someone called it asscar, and believe me i am not fond of it. but if we're now off onto the origins of things in "sports" nascar is the only sport i know of that has it's origins in a very paxacidus style -- running alcohol during prohibition. nascar has pretty cool origins imo, but now it has nothing cool about it. i heard the red hot chili peppers were at a race recently. i was like really? not surprised, aren't they one of rick rubin's boy bands? commercialism at its finest.

"Then again, who am I? A nobody with to many thoughts and no coin."

well, that's me too. :)

"whatever I wrote this evening sure felt good writing"

good, i don't really know of a better reason for writing. thanks. :)
