That new Che Movie

For my sins I started my political life out on the hard left. I don't live there anymore. I retain some of the tools of Karl Marx and I value and appreciate all that he did that was good. His ideas were absorbed by many and the end result was not good, regardless of the intention. Doubtless, this is all apparent to the PA ,all of the time. I do try to fight tooth and nail aginst the romanticism of the worst of left politics (And only the worst) but I don't need to bother on this board when the movie review on slate.com of the new Che biography does the job so well for me. I don't know how to do the link but please read this.

Funny, I read Che's Motocylcle Diary autobiography. I didn't hear anything in the tone of the book that would lead Che to behave like in the Slate article mentions.

I always thought Che was a doctor who hated the hypocrisy of the cruelty and fascism of the South American governments. That's the Che I knew from the Diaries and from the stories I read, etc.

Anyway, time to check the facts. Che may not be the lovable freedom fighter George Bush is.

, i mean the movie moderator, that's what you get...

anyway. i don't anymore -- but i used to have arguments all the time with german romantic lefty types about cuba. how the cubans were doing their best, how at least they had universal medical care, and that political freedoms weren't possible in a besieged country. and all that bullshit.

so who needs a movie that romanticises ché? certainly not me.

i for one am with tommy on this one (although i am at a loss to how he could have ever been a marxist -- on the other hand this might explain his odd affinity to hitchens...). if there is one thing the left no longer needs, it is sentimentality; the left needs intelligence, clear thinking and energy if it is ever to win against the new right wing hegemony. of course, intelligence, clear thinking and energy are exactly the positive properties that clinton has, and those never won him any points with the ex-marxist crew either...
