Frankly .... I've never heard of Luis Bunuel so I have no opinion good or bad on him.

I do have an opinion, however, on how people with dissenting points of view are treated. I remember when everyone was up in arms over some of the laws that were passed here after 09/11 that were seen as restricting civil liberties ... such as the right to dissent. It was appalling to many here as it seemed also that people who disagreed with the war in Iraq were thought of as unpatriotic and protests should be stifled. Hey ... I'm all for dissent. You should dissent if you feel the need ... no matter what the cause.

Sooo ... why is it that when someone ardently disagrees with the prevailing points of view here whether it be political ideology or the arts that they literally get trampled? Hell, I know it happens. It happened to me several times. I only stayed around as one of the proprietors of the board, Mr. McCutcheon, plainly told me that what makes Pax interesting is the mix of genders, ideas, thoughts, opinions, religious philosophies, and sexual orientations. Martin Balsimico even called me a "cold motherfucker" and tried to get everyone to ignore me. Luckily, no one seemed to follow suit that I know of. I never cursed him. I plainly stated my opinions and dissents ... this doesn't mean you have to attack personally.

And here we go again ... this new guy Tommy comes on and makes a very mild comment on Jeff Buckley and gets railed at by Mark. He states that he thinks that people join the bandwagon of agreeability (which seems to be true sometimes) and basically gets called an idiot by Martin. I have to say that if Martin is going to quote Oscar Wilde on boring and charming people ... isn't that argument coming across as arrogant as he is calling Tommy? Saying "Psychogenic stupid things" ... isn't that the pot calling the kettle black??? Hell, Martin is the oldest guy here (that I know of) and is always the first to call names like a juvenile. What is up with that???

It's gonna get dull sometimes. So what if someone says so? Why get so personally offended??

"Gang of wankers with cultural cliff notes " ... that was kinda amusing.

myke

PS -- Yo, Brett ... if the Canadian monolith doesn't take over the Carolinas, can you at least find me a job in Vancouver so I can move the hell oughta here???? Talk about being bored!!!

PS2 -- If you wanna see a good, classy action move, see "the Italian Job" starring Charlese Therone, Mark Wahlberg, Seth Green, Donald Sutherland, Mos Def, and Jason Statham. Was much better than I expected. Loved the scenes in Venice.

Myke, any time you wanna come for a visit it's cool with me. I always enjoyed your posts and Tommy's posts make me giggle. I loved the cultural cliff notes shot as well. The guy really has a flair. We're working on our invasion plans up here, it just has to wait until the Stanley Cup is over, which I think is in August.

Brett, you like insults as much as the next guy..... as long as the next guy is a foul mouthed cunt, surely. For the record Brett, my favourite movie of all time is Crocodile Dundee. It still strikes me as fresh and amusing when I stumble across it late at night.

Martin I cannot lie, you wound me. It is one thing to be told that you are not funny, (meaning you can't construct a joke) to be told you have no sense of humour is another. I try to put a joke or two in and I try to see the humour in others. For instance, I was aghast that nobody responded to the comment by Mark about the spirit of Jeff Buckley flying around the studio with the White Stripes. That post alone has spawned tons of jokes in this house.

The bit about praising the white stripes and then going on to say something like - but I must qualify that by saying if Jeff were still alive he would be doing even better. We use that all the time. i.e "That's a great cup of coffee you made but I must qualify it by saying if Jeff were here....."

One of the other jokes came from the phrase (and I'm sort of quoting but I'm not going back to look) "I remain convinced that the soul of Jeff buckley was in the studio with the white stripes." The words, "remain convinced," got me and a friend wondering who had tried and failed to convince Mark otherwise. His analyst? The guy passing him the bottle of rubbing alchohol? The voices in his head? His weeping parents? So we are also using the phrase, "I remain convinced," when we then go onto describe something, that is at best, highly unlikely.

Now onto matters arising. It doesn't take a genius to know that talking about pop music has it's limitations as far as I am concerned. There's only so much you can debate. On the other hand a good or bad book can inspire some great discussion. Anybody up for us all reading the same book and then weighing in? I speak as someone who had a wondereful time last night at my reading group. If enough people are interested then we'll start arguing about which book.

I'm up for any book you recommend. Sorry my insults aren't up to par. Hopefully I'll redeem myself at some future date. I do request that you don't ask to read some tired classic. How about a new author? Someone that has just published a first book? Not some wierd drug induced Indy writer, something decent. Ever read Generica? Another favourite (though not new) is Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. You pick it, I'll read it.

Go fuck yourself.

tommy: i think it's great that you acknowledged my complaint and parried the argument without getting all hot and bothered. shows you got some of the right stuff and that there is some humility mixed in with the arrogance and the intelligence. now don't be calling me a wanker and we'll get along just fine.

(it's not that i have a personal thing with masturbation -- even though i think that it is almost as big a waste of time as the internet is -- but that i prefer not to accept the psychosexual implications of the term 'wanker').

may i ask that you reconsider your elitist, or better middle-brow rejection of pop analysis. there is plenty of really good discourse out there. paglia writes well about stupid topics such as madonna even though she doesn't really understand pop; julie burchill writes well about almost everything even though she is turning into a reactionary; bordieu has a lot to say about anything; and almost anything diedrich diedrichsen has ever written is worth thinking about, even when it is ridiculous.

why be so sour about buñuel? what's your problem with the pixies? if you disdain dadaism, pray tell us why.

Masturbation a waste of time? Surely it's time better spent than posting on Pax Acidus. As Woody Allen said, it's sex with someone you should love.

Personally, I like the term "Wanker". I guess I choose not to really analyze the psychosexual implications, but I find it satisfying to refer to someone as a wanker, and I'm even becoming a fan of the term "cunt" despite my former distaste of that word.

We're all sometimes wankers, sometimes cunts, and sometimes , as Tommy puts it "all fab"

So there, ya bunch of wanker cunts

Well that shut you all up.

And if McCutcheon says "dull as dishwater" one more time I'll personally track down that loser guy that posted gibberish and give him a stipend to spam McC's cellphone with gibberish text messages.

The Pixies rule, particularly "Debaser" and the album it's from. But Martino, how does this relate to Bunuel? (sorry I haven't the faintest idea how to spell it properly given my keyboard, that's how it was spelled on the VHS box) Why do you say it's been awhile since pop touched Luis? What does that mean?

Tommy I can't quite figure out how you've outlawed liking anything, and therefore, anyone else saying they like it as well. Maybe you're right. Maybe this site would graduate from its 'dull as dishwater' status if we were all arguing all the time.
That means we're not allowed to say we like anything from now on. Even Crocodile Dundee.

I'm all for where your professor was at, it's boring to just incorporate or agree with other people's ideas. But if we all held different points of view all the time, then we'd have no common ground and the human race would disintegrate and die.

For the record, I don't think Jeff Buckley or Van Morrison or anyone else is worth marring your skin with a tattoo. But unlike you, I'm willing to say "to each his own".

Also, I am honestly flattered that my one tiny post has been appropriated as fuel for jokes at your house! Hey if I can make you laugh that's half the fun!

Of course you know I meant all that 'spirit of Jeff' stuff totally literally. Oh yeah. I honestly believe without any doubt at all that the spirit of Jeff Buckley was flying around the studio when White Stripes were recording.

Seems to me Martino had it right when he said you have no sense of humor.

Furthermore, I am well on for this "we all read the same book and then discuss it" game. But Tommy you have to name the book. It's your idea, so let's go.
I will be less busy at the end of this month and will have full time to dig in.
