So a few days ago, I was doing a job down by the lakeside of Madison for these swanky fraternity apartments. A handyman named Curtis, who thrilled me with stories of carp fishing, carp eating, and the blues shows he attended, came outside and told me that he had just heard on the radio that Johnny Cash and B.B. King had died. I lost my ambition to work immediately. Curtis then brought out a radio and played his Cash and Dylan sessions for us. It was a somber moment.
I get home and turn on the news, and watch for about an hour. Nothing said about the man in black coming around, or B.B. King for that matter. I was puzzled. Curtis the handyman was so sure of himself, I thought it must be true. Finally after hearing nothing about the grim news, I decided that Curtis' shit must have been strong that morning. Moral of the story you ask? Never trust a crackhead.

Johnny Cash died two minutes ago. No, I really shouldn't joke about these things. Sloth, his wife Linda, Amanda and me are road tripping to Wisconsin this winter Jackie -C. Slackjaw? I'll check it out I spose. Kelly S. is married you say? If you see her, tell her I say hello, she might remember me. And yes, I've seen Ryan a few times since he's been back. Spent the summerfest week with him and the wife while they supported my drinking habit. I owe them a dinner at the finest vegetarian restaurant in Milwaukee, if there is such a thing.

Johnny Cash has died. I knew this day was coming but am still very sad about the fact we have lost one of the people in this world that makes life worth living. It's up to us left behind now to make our mark. Today I'm wearing black Levi's and a black Spacemen 3 t-shirt and black socks in tribute. Today I dress for The Man In Black.

The Day Johnny Cash Died

Today is September 12th
I was awoken to the radio
The station was tuned to NPR
The man speaking said Johnny Cash died
I knew that day was coming
I was still in slumber so it didn't sink in
Not until I kept listening
The voice speaking also said John Ritter died
That was a bit of a shock
The world without the bumbling 3's Company man
He was so young
Then I woke up, maybe in disbelief
Because Johnny not John
Or maybe both, I don't know
On September 10th my friend was born
We celebrated his birth
The next day was the tragic 9/11
That was yesterday,
And yesterday I barely gave pause
Not because I'm unpatriotic
But because I didn't know those people
Well, I didn't know Johnny Cash either
But that didn't keep me from crying
as the day worn on
I played his records
And drank whiskey all that night
A girl told me he died of a broken heart
June passed a few months before
This could be true despite his poor health
and that day
I worn black Levi pants, black T-shirt and black socks
All in tribute to Johnny Cash

I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT
I have a clock radio that is set to go off early in the morning so I can go to work. Friday morning the song playing at the time this happened was Johnny Cash's "Hurt", a (gulp) Nine Inch Nails cover, apparently of all things. Now I hate NIN with a passion. But this song was EXTRAORDINARY as done by Johnny Cash. And I just want to say that I have been convinced. I did appreciate his version of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus especially since I HATE the DM version of the song, and I sure thought his cover of Nick Cave's Mercy Seat was cool. But "Hurt" has convinced me that I have had a fundamental belief in Johnny Cash which has been lying dormant in me for quite a long time.
