howard zinn, also a music critic

Post by megapulse »

hz: "I define the spiritual in emotional terms - to the extent that religion can draw on the Ten Commandments (for example, thou shalt not kill), it is important. And I find the spiritual in the arts, because they nourish the spirit and move people. Artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, for example, and now Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. We need more of these."

ament! mr. zinn :)

Joan Baez makes me want to crush my ballsack in a vise-grips.

Eddie Vedder? Is he still alive? No seriously I need to check out his latest stuff... supposed to be good.

I remember reading Zinn's People's History in college. What a great book. It changed my whole perspective about history and what it is for and who it is for.

ouch, jc

yeh, i don't really like joan baez i don't know why. i like a lot of folk music, don't get me wrong, she's just not the one for me i guess.

i thought the comparison though was really?? i don't know. i mean maybe a little out there. eddie vedder and bob dylan? i don't know. i guess i can see it. dylan did the hurricane about carter who was wrongly convicted of murder, which is one of the most chillingly awesome narratives of all time -- it just is, and then edddie wrote "army reserve" with damien echols of the west memphis three, he's on death row. . . so there's that. and eddie / pearl jam covers a lot of dylan, and there are so many political songs that well, and in concert you know these guys have definite political opinions, which is why a lot of people think they can go to hell, but one reason why i like them.

sloth i don't know your musical tastes. i think your taste in books is fabulous . . . top notch, and so is howard zinn -- amazing! you might be happy to know, or not, that my brother uses the people's history in his high school classes. a little has changed i guess.

the pearl jam/zinn connection has been there for a while, one of their songs . . . i think it's entitled "down" -- i can't remember which album has the line -- "you can't be neutral on a moving train" which is the title of zinn's autobiography? zinn's something.

i think . . . i am so biased towards loving this band i could not tell you an objective, honest opinion of the new album. i had to read most of the lyrics as with most of eddie's singing i can't understand half of it.
