Steve Earle

Post by Tommy Martyn »

Anybody listen to him here? I got given some of his stuff. He has been going for ages. I love some of it. Just about the best country(ish) music not by someone whose best work is at least 15 old.

I know his name but I don't know what he looks like. I think I get him mixed up with Steve Forbert, who I also know nothing about but at least I can picture what he looks like. Of course I'll have to look all this stuff up later.

you can't be from where i'm from and not heard of steve earle.

there are three songs that remind me of my home, and i do mean the road i actually live on, not home in an abstract sense, more than anything else.

# 1 is copperhead road -- steve earle -- particularly right now because the hubby's uncle was special ops in afghanistan years ago, and all of this shit has made him pretty crazy again; he's okay, but everybody was pretty worried about him for a while. the hubby is making a cd for him with don't be shy on it . . . because he needs to mellow out, so yes, steve earle, and copperhead road, which is a radio staple around here:

volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Well the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road
