The Smiths & more insanely brilliant bands from Manchest

Post by marky »

Oh god I'm dying against my will in a Smiths trip right now.

I didn't mean to go this way.

the Smiths are not as holy as The Beatles, but they cast their net in very well indeed. The only way I can experience them is to tolerate the feeling of being in high school, but all the same...the Smiths were insanely brilliant, especially the album Meat Is Murder.

anyone remember the Factory band from Manchester called Northside from 1990/1991. BOY I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is this label that has hinted at the possibility of releasing the long lost 2nd album of theirs, I am so excited.

But for now it's the Smiths and A Certain Ratio. Because you have a funky love for your fellow man (and woman). and that's why

Northside were fucking signed by Tony Wilson what the fuck else do you want?

I can't find a picture to post. That's because you have to go out and buy Northside's Chicken Rhythms if you care about Factory Records. That's why. I was in Manchester when their album came out. that's why I'm doomed.

Oh SLOTH! Have got it? Have you got Northside's "Chicken Rhythms"????? A Happy Mondays folksman must have it. To pay tribute to Factory records and Tony Wilson's genius.

You can order it here:

NORTHSIDE - Chicken Rhythms + Singles CD (LTM (UK): LTM2386 ) $14.99

NORTHSIDE

5024545355123. 17 tracks. LTM is pleased to present an expanded reissue of the debut album by Manchester 'baggy' contenders Northside, originally released by Factory Records in June 1991. Born of the same scene that spawned the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and Charlatans, Northside formed late in 1989 and joined Factory the following year. During their brief but eventful career, the band sold out tours in the UK and Japan, played live in the USA and Europe, and gigged with Happy Mondays. Each of their three singles made the national chart in the UK, and even saw Northside reach Top of the Pops. After the collapse of Factory in 1992 the band split. Produced by Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds, Echo and the Bunnymen), the album Chicken Rhythms made the national Top 20 in the UK on release. This new, expanded remaster on LTM now features all three singles released in 1990-91: the Radio 1-banned Shall We Take a Trip? (climbed to #50 on the UK national singles chart), My Rising Star (#32) and Take 5 (#41). The seven bonus tracks also include the b-side Moody Places, three rare instrumental tracks, and two live numbers included on overseas editions of the album. The booklet includes new artwork, period ephemera and detailed liner notes.

If you're unlucky enough to be an American you can find a lot of great Factory records reissues at the above site.

You haven't lived until you've heard Northside's Funky Monkey.

Oh yeah Marky there is a two issue interview with Morrissey in NME. In it he says that he's still supports militant vegetarian groups, still hates Bush and Blair, and that he is sleeping with women.

Blimey!

Well you know his album is due in April, and yes he really will be dressed in a tuxedo with a conductor's stick on the cover when you see it in real life as Morrissey's album cover you will drip (not trip) out of your mind. Even if the music is bad I mean that cover is amazing!!!

I heard one song I didn't like it much. We'll see.

Will we always have Paris, Sloth?

<melodramatic classical music accentuates the desparateness of the scene. Bush & co. have done serious damage to Marky's will to live. But yet the music is so fucking good so who wants to commit suicide when the new New Order album is due for Summer and they already finished 80% of it last year?>

They are talking about IMPEACHMENT NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT CRIMINALS IN THE WHITE HOUSE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT A SOLID LEGAL CASE NOW THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW

IS THE TIME TO PESTER CONGRESS FOR IMPEACHMENT IMPEACHMENT IMPEACHMENT IMPEACHMENT

etc etc etc etc.

Hey I'm going to play the fucking Fall in a minute here and you cannot bloody stop me.

Even if I have to dig through my giagantic fucking box of cassettes. Their album was called "Shiftwork" then, 1991 I think but it was never released in the U.S. as far as I know, so it isn't easy to find I don't think. I've got to fucking dig through my cassettes now :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Okay I found the cassette. Shiftwork by The Fall. Yeah this will be amazing. I particularly liked this one but I don't pull it out often.

Now I just have to hook up my tape deck. All this is especially laborious when you are drunk, don't you see?

Oh also!!!!

There is this song that I got in my head today from the Manchester comp that I made McC a long time ago, I suddenly got this song in my head and I couldn't figure out who it was or wherit came from, but it's by The Still, it's called "9.5"

But mainly these days I am just insane over that all girl band called the RUNAWAYS from the late 70's jesus christ they were really fucking good, I mean aside from any feminist/erotic fantasy, they were just really fucking good. But I don't have the first two albums and I fucking drove all over Seattle to countless CD shops and came out empty handed because god hates me.

The Runaways were like pop-metal.

Here's their most famous song, Cherry Bomb. Be quick, though for the link only lasts 7 days:
