My idea for three dimensional cosmic factory records chess, comes from a science fiction novel I've been working on for some time. It goes something like this....after exhausting the resources of planet earth, humans are forced into outer space. When they get to the other side of the galaxy (this takes up a lot of time in the book - McC would get it done in about two and a half pages) humanity comes face to face with the supreme being. To cut the story even shorter, the god like entity demands of humanity that they show him something that could contribute to divine existence from all the wonderous gifts he has given them. One by one the accomplishments of all history are shot down as mere folly and ego. Eventually there is the sound of a beer crate being kicked over and Marky stumbles into view and says, "If I can beat you at a game of my choosing will you let my people free." God says, "You're on."

Marky whips out his chess set. Each team has the same figures Hannet,Wilson, Gretton, Peter whats-is-face the designer etc. Marky then gives a brief run down of the rules and the game kicks off. A couple of minutes in and God moves Tony Wilson three spaces down the board and Marky shouts at him , "What are you doing?" God gives his reasons. Marky then points out that the relative values of the pieces are tied to the factory records era being represented. God was represented by the label just after the release of "The unsightly and the serene" on 10 inch. Consequently although the value of producer Hannet is high. The value of Wilson is low, 'cos the record didn't sell and the label is skint. This scenario repeats and repeats with Marky becoming more and more obscure. Until he wipes out half the board with Jilted John. After declining a "best of three" Marky saves all humanity and gets even more pissed.
