The Rakes & The Strokes

Post by Sloth »

Been listening to these two bands a lot for the last few weeks.

The Rakes are like a cross between The Cure and The Bravery. 22 Grand Job is a fucking awesome pop song.

The new Strokes grows on you. They have really perfected the "New York" sound on this one and the influences from Queen (The opening lick is "I want to break free" for chrissakes) to the Talking Heads is superfantastic.

Anybody else listening to them?

uk music

there's some amazing music coming out from all over the uk at the moment. the arctic monkeys really are the best of the bunch though. 19 year olds and they have so much talent - the lead singer elevates them above the rest of the pack though.

Yeah it's pretty good.

The way the NME writes about them you'd think John, Paul, George, and Ringo came back from the dead.

Noel Gallagher was quoted as saying they had a crap "pub band" name, which may be true. It is kind of a shit name for a band but what's in a name?

And the name of the album... "Whatever you say I am, that's what I'm not!".

That sounds like something a 13 year-old would yell to their parents after he gets caught jerking off.

At least that's what I said, anyway.

Sorry I didn't mean to detract from this thread with my Style Council insanity.

I know I need to check out some new music, I really do. Even if I don't care if She Wants Revenge drop off the face of the earth.

The Rakes is such a funny name for a band, I'd like to hear what they sound like.

Okay here is a track... maybe not the best on the disc but probably the most catchy...

Having seen the Arctic Monkeys live about 3 months ago, I can reccomend it highly. Haven't done much moshing for years - was completely overwhelmed by a wave of people and proceeded to get stuck in for the next hour.
The Rakes are a cool band - they have a brand new single (not on the album) out soon - it's very good as well.
Islington is in fine fettle, new bars and restaurants popping up on a weekly basis and a few good small music venues as well.

The Strokes are pretty cool. People say the last album was shit but I think its their best. They're only problem is that they are too cerebral for the Americans and too American for the Europeans. They are like the ultimate NME band.

But the important thing is, they met Lou Reed.

I wish you all well in your Oasis fandom.
