just one question from the side though. what does this "support the soldiers" mean? no demonstrating against the war? no posting anti-war things on a bulletin board?

would it have meant supporting johnson and then nixon to the very end?

i would say if the cause is just, then support the fighters. otherwise fight the war. what do you say?

Yeah, Mav, I'm not quite sure how what I posted translated to an impression that I was not supporting the troops, but if you or anyone else took it that way, it was not intended as such. I realize the blame doesn't fall on them.

On a lighter note than earlier, I agree with the Guinness=Oil comparison. War for oil is controversial, but I think there would be much more world support if a deranged dictator took control of the world's Guinness supply. There could be a movie idea in that...if Mike Myers doesnt already have it in development.

To Martino and Mark, I didn't think that you were in any way criticizing American troops, I was just practicing one of the things that Mr Bush is so fond of: Pre-emptive strikes. I was in a mood this morning, one that was dark, calculating, and filled with premonitions of bad times for our military. They are not in the same situation that they were when last Americans flooded the borders of Iraq. Knowing that, I hated the idea that some people around the world, and perhaps some of you who contribute your thoughts to this bulletin board might start blaming them for the possibly reprehensible actions that they will soon be ordered to do. It was not to suggest that you would do so, but to hopefully call attention early to the fact that they may too hate what they must now do, as any soldier who has been in combat would.

This bulletin board has more than its share of intelligent, well informed and well-spoken members. It bothers me to no end that these voices are not heard. If a random collection of regular citizens can be so insightful and rational and insightful, why cant those in government. Perhaps we should all "quit our day jobs" and run for office. It couldn't hurt.

At this point, I'd vote for the fictional pairing of Chris Rock and Bernie Mac for president and vice-president. (a new, undoubtedly horrible movie called Head of State, for those who haven't heard of it)

Better yet, we should go back to a series of posts we made a few months ago about forming the nation of Paxacidus, with Sloth and McCutcheon as Prsident anv Vice president, though they'd probably both want to be "vice" president since they're so fond of vices...

Not at all, Mav. I've made typos here myself, and I always enjoy reading what you write here. There's something very reasoned and intelligent about the way you express things that I find thought- provoking and refreshing. You're very good at expressing yourself.

Let's consider for a moment, the troops. They are for the most part, young and inexperienced. Their Commander in Chief is misguided and is extremely committed to taking a course of action that is both unpopular on the world stage and dangerous to their physical well-being.

Fact #1 They are there.

Fact #2 They have to follow orders.

Fact #3 There are thousands of opposing troops who want to kill them.

Fact #4 Many of their own countrymen hate the what it is that they are about to be ordered to do.

Fact #5 These soldiers are not, even though they made the choice to join the military, innately bad people

The American president, for better or worse, has committed our country and its military to a course of action which leads directly to combat, death, and destruction.

At this point, all of our dissent, protest, and outrage will not stop it. Those of you who protested tried, and he and his advisors ignored it. Now, the only thing left to do, is think of the troops.

Hate the war, but support the troops. They face far more danger than any of us ever will, even taking into account the possibility of terrorist attacks on American soil. They are at the mercy of a commander in Chief who has never led men in combat. Hopefully, their direct superiors will have more intelligence and experience than that, and will accomplish the objectives set for them and bring them home safely.

I too, like Myke, am going on the record. Many of my posts have seemed in t he past to make me seem callous, militaristic, and right wing. In all seriousness, I would like to clarify my position.

I have been against this war, not on principle per se, but due to the rash and misguided timing on the part of President Bush. I never supported alienating allies that we WILL need in the near future. Although I agree that Saddam Hussein and his oppressive regime must go for the good of the Iraqi people and their neighbors, not just our oil consumption, coalition building, and human intelligence (spies) could have brought him down as well.
But all of that means nothing now. We are, and will be at war. We must put aside our differences and think of the troops. They are what matters now, and they truly believe that they are fighting for us.

Support that.
