Well I do recall reading once that Lou Reed had done some songwriting work prior to Velvet Underground - that he'd written songs that were then performed by other groups, which I guess happened a lot in those days. I didn't really think much of it, but recently came across one of these songs online and was delighted and surprised to hear his own voice singing on it. Then I found this website. I'm sure most of you here won't care a jot about it, but I'm thinking of McC and anyone else who might be interested:

The Primitives single "Sneaky Pete"/"The Ostrich" has Lou singing on it and is absolutely spectactular!!! The Roughnecks track also has Lou singing, also very good.

Early Louie
I got a 45 re-issue of Your Love and Merry Go Round which he did when he was 16. And also So Blue and Leave Her For Me that hit the streets in 1958.
I wonder if we asked Lou if he feels like the same person than as now he would probably be like fuck off of course I feel like the same person who the fuck else would I feel like.
And I would feel like Lester Bangs but I would also know that I don't even feel like the same person I was yesterday.

Yes, "Your Love" & "Merry Go Round" are great, too.
This has inadvertently sent me on a very unexpected VU trip. I found out about demos on the Peel Slowly and See box set that I wasn't aware of before, and perhaps more importantly, I recently got the '72 Bataclan live CD by Reed, Cale & Nico...have you heard this? Unfortunately a few of the Nico tracks happen to be some of my least favourite by her (which is strange considering I pretty much worship her) but other than that this is a fascinating disc. Some of the Cale stuff made me embarassed because I have slagged off Cale pretty heavily in the past, never would have thought he was capable of this.
I'm looking forward to finally purchasing the 1974 live CD by Eno, Cale, Nico & Kevin Ayers.
They're like weird twins those two albums, one without Reed, one without Eno! One in '72, one in '74. Both missing someone very important but still including the beloved Nico! And then there's this Cale problem I have. Couldn't deal with him for years, now I find I'm curious as to his solo work.
Kevin Ayers is okay by me, too. A tamer Syd Barrett or something? I don't know what to call him. He's alright. We'll see.

Unfortunately a few of the Nico tracks just happen to be some of my least favourite songs by her (which is strange considering I pretty much worship her) but other than that this is a fascinating disc, and certainly her "Frozen Warnings" is to be treasured here. Some of the Cale stuff made me embarassed because I have slagged off Cale pretty heavily in the past, never would have thought he was capable of this. Anyway, if you want to hear a really different, somber version of Waiting For My Man for a change, this is the place to go. Lou does better here than on his first solo album, I think.
I'm also looking forward to finally getting around to the 1974 live CD by Eno, Cale, Nico & Kevin Ayers. Maybe I'll get it on vinyl.
