new morrissey

Post by martino »

is it possible to dislike a record that has tracks with titles such as

"I Have Forgiven Jesus", or

"The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores", or

"How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel", or

"All The Lazy Dykes"

???

incidentially, the music isn't bad as i expected either.

thumbs up from me, thus.

what do you people think?

Well, it's nice to hear you've taken an interest in it, Martino. Certainly there's been a lot of talk about it on the music freak message board, as would be expected. I guess I've been wondering if there's any reason I should listen to it. Morrissey is just one of those artists that I left behind somewhere along the way of my life that it would be hard for me to back to. I feel the same way about the new Cure album that is supposed to come out. Last time I honestly cared about The Cure was a long, long time ago. I don't know how people can get excited about a new Cure album in 2004. For me it just wouldn't feel right.

I'm still pretty much on a Krautrock trip. LOVE Roedelius' album Jardin Au Fou. There's a book about his life that just came out. Born in '34 he was drafted into the Hitler Youth, and went to prison for 2 years for rebelling, which included forced labor in coal mines. All this way before becoming an influential electronic music pioneer in the 70's under the name Cluster (with his buddy Moebius-although they sure look like they could have been lovers by the pic on one of the albums). Jardin Au Fou is just gorgeous, and has a lot of piano on it, too, which I like.

Also I like Ash Ra Tempel's Schwingungen and some of their late 70's stuff as Ashra isn't so bad either.

The brand new Nick Drake is coming in the mail to me any day now (holding breath).

ok marky, i get your point that a lot of old stuff is irretrievably irrelevant.

it's interesting indeed to see what wears well and what gets dated. cure: for sure; i agree with you here. morrissey: perhaps.

krautrock: too weirdo for me, on balance.

speaking of weirdo: i am re-enjoying family (68-73). i mis-placed my collection of lp's after moving house for the umpteempth time in the 1980s but now that i have downloaded "music in a doll's house" and "bandstand", i can say they are still impressive. for me they are the most underappreciated brit prog-rockists of the early 1970s. what's your take?

Well, I'm not sure. I did try Family once, and obviously it didn't stick to me. I'm a little scared of prog rock sometimes. I mean, I remember thinking early Genesis with Peter Gabriel was pretty interesting when I was younger, but prog rock scares me because often it means going on for a long long time within one song and long guitar solos.

I wanted to check out Peter Hammill's old band Van Der Graaf Generator lately. But it just scared me. Prog rock scares me. Do you have any words of encouragement?

Also I don't wish to sound cynical or coldly dismissive about Morrissey. It doesn't mean that I don't respect him, etc. it's just that with some artists, they remind me too much of the past and it's not their fault. I really like Morrissey in interviews, though.

In fact, I bought the new issue of Mojo and he's on the cover. I haven't read the article yet, but I will. Mojo are supposed to have a new special issue out now about The Smiths, too. Have to get that one.

Also, I find myself rather musically bored at the moment. Time for a change. I've been reading a lot about some late 70's NY/European disco releases I wasn't aware of including Italia-disco or whatever it's called.

Speaking as a person with a moon in Gemini, I can really tell the Sun is in Gemini right now. ARRGH! It's almost a little too much nervous energy, boredom, indecision, twin-like...
I've got one hell of a nice Marilyn Monroe picture on my MM calendar this month, though, and wouldn't you know it? Her birthday was June 1. Happy Birthday Geminis!!!

Well I don't know if you saw the other thread in this section, Martino - it's the one I titled "Here's what the new Morrissey album looks like" or something like that. That's where I talked about Ringleader of the Tormentors. I was very disappointed in it. I played it through twice and it left me cold. I'm going to sell it when I get the chance.
