A few German bands I wanna talk about

Post by marky »

Through a few strange, unrelated coincidences, I've found myself drawn toward some exclusively German bands in the past week. Add to this that I happen to be reading Nietzsche on the bus and I began to realize that suddenly I was surrounded by German this, German that, all the time. It's really kindof weird, but I guess coincidences can occur. Maybe.

I have also been pleasantly surprised at just how many German words I can actually remember from taking it in high school.

Anyway, the bands I'm talking about are:

Cluster (called Kluster in the early 70's) was comprised of two men called Moebius and Roedelius, who both went on to do solo albums and work with Conny Plank and even Brian Eno. I have gone completely crazy over Cluster and Moebius and Roedelius. And it's easy because of course they only have 70 billion albums. And the people they collaborated with have 70 billion more albums...

Secondly this band called Fehlfarben. They did stuff in about '79-'81 that I think is really cream of the crop as far as this punk/post-punk era goes. First album was called "33 Tage in Ketten" and the second album I keep forgetting the name of but the first word is "Monarchie".

Palais Schaumburg. I think they are German as well. Maybe not one of my fave bands ever, but certainly very interesting. They are post-punk era too, and like A Certain Ratio crossed with English Beat, sort of. I need to hear more.

You should check out Ledernacken. And this band with a hot chick in it called Nena.

i appreciate your interest, marky.

the fehlfarben album was called "monarchie und alltag".

while you are at it, i recommend checking out DAF (deutsch-amerikanische freundschaft); they were quite special in their day. had a lousy reunion about a year ago though.

speaking of lousy reunions, nena is going strong after five-or-so comebacks (i am not counting), but i never liked her brand of rockist pop and am pretty sure i never will.

what i am sure i like, and what i believe both mc and marky will be able to enjoy, is contriva. even though they are current and not historical.

if any of you guys need a recording from germany just let me know. i am no good at unearthing rare vinyl but if it is just something that is hard to get in your country and easy to find in mine, i'll be glad to oblige.

one last thing, to marky: since you have talent in understanding the lingo and interest in the country, surely you should come visit germany. i think you would like it. you are most kindly invited to crash anytime.

Martino, it sounds delicious. Only problem is that money/job/school-wise, I don't really plan on traveling until 2006. I hope you can wait that long. I'm not joking about this. I've set a date for 2006 to go back to England, and I shall merrily make my way though Germany and the larger cities in Scotland too. Come to think of it, hopefully Americans won't be hated so much abroad then! HA HA.
Yeah right.

Anyway, I have actually already been on a D.A.F. trip some years ago...probably about the first half of 1996. I really went nuts on some D.A.F. tracks I taped from the two albums the radio station had that I DJ'd at, but I ended up finally taping over what I had of them. It was fun while it lasted and I should probably get that stuff again. Instead, though, rather coincendentally (wow it gets hard to spell when you've had a few drinks, doesn't it?) I have recently downloaded a few tracks by Der Plan, who were supposedly some early incarnation of D.A.F. or had a member that went on to be in D.A.F., whatever. I must say these tracks are very entertaining but terribly funny: I mean they haven't dated too well and midway through two of them I started laughing out loud! I don't want to say they are BAD, but they really are BAD in the sense that a B-Movie is fun to watch! And hey, anything that can help me laugh in these times is okay by me!

As for Nena, they were the main reason I wanted to take German in the first place, although I remember my German teacher's delight when I brought an Einsterzende Neubauten LP to class! But I am nothing but a Nena novice.
I only know the song everyone else knows. I must try to hear some other Nena and see how it hits me.

2006? then I will come down from the frozen tundra of Sweden for drinks too.

Linda and I are planning on opening an American bar / restaurant in Stockholm. My business is boring me to death sometimes. I want to bartend and drink at the same time and get wholesale prices. Gotta be better than answering emails all day and waiting for the phone to ring.

good show sloth. i will come to the opening. seriously i think opening a bar is a great thing to do as long as you do not have kids or alcoholic tendencies.

one more thing for all of yous. to what marky said about the world hating americans:

surprisingly, americans are not hated abroad, at least not in my neck of the woods. they can behave obnoxiously -- talking whiny-loud about how the locals suck -- and will be passed off as non-representative cases. just happened the other day in my town, as a matter of fact. should bush get elected you may face questions as to why americans actually believe saddam was responsible for 9/11 but otherwise people generally like yanks. i'll be fucked if i know why, though.
